When Marvel Studios' What If...? debuts on Disney Plus later this month, one of the more beloved non-superpowered characters will make a return to the MCU. Phil Coulson, the character who debuted on the big screen and then carried Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. through seven seasons on television, will return to the MCU in an animated form on What If ...?

Phil Coulson first appeared in the original Iron Man back in 2008 and has taken an interesting path ever since. He last appeared on the big screen in Captain Marvel, though that was set before he was "killed" in the first Avengers movie by Loki. It's unclear if he'll make an appearance in any of the upcoming films, so it's possible his apparent role in What If ...? will be his last.

The Disney Plus series' full cast list was just released and for the most part, the roster of voice performers includes quite a few names and faces who were expected by fans. The nice detail about the series is that while some of the characters will be rearranged, such as T'Challa becoming Star-Lord, many of the actors from the MCU films will return to voice their animated versions in What If ...?

Because the show has been in development for quite a while, even the Black Panter-turned-Star Lord is going to be voiced by Chadwick Boseman, who apparently recorded his lines before he passed away. In all, it appears that almost anyone who had a memorable role in any of the previous movies will at least be making a short appearance in What If...? Because the series is relying on keeping what the plots of episodes will entail under wraps, it's not known for what purpose Phil Coulson will return. However, Clark Gregg is definitely signed on to portray the character again.

Other actors who lent voices to deceased characters include Andy Serkis (Klaw) Frank Grillo (Crossbones), and of course, Paul Bettany (The Vision). Phil Coulson isn't the only character who once died but is now back alive for the series, at the very least.

Josh Brolin being on the cast list seems to indicate Thanos will be making a return. Loki's Tom Hiddleston is back as well, though MCU fans already knew there was at least a variant of his who was alive and kicking. The question now is whether What If ...? will have Phil Coulson take on a new role, or whether he'll still be an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

What If...? is set to premiere on August 11th, 2021, on Disney Plus.
