The first new Xbox Game Pass titles for August are here, and they cover a variety of genres, including roguelikes, puzzle games, and sports titles.

Most Xbox Game Pass fans know by now to expect new games to pour in on a regular basis. Every month sees fresh titles being added to its catalog for subscribers to download, and that trend continues with the first round of Xbox Game Pass titles for August 2021.

Having grown a lot over the last few years, Xbox Game Pass has become one of the best deals for gamers these days. More than the sheer number of available titles, the dozens of games on Microsoft’s service boast an impressive amount of variety, ranging from major first and third-party titles to a growing number of indies that might have fallen under most people’s radars otherwise.

That variety is on display with the seven games that have just been added. Spread across the PC, console, and cloud versions of Xbox Game Pass, these new titles run the gamut between cult classics, recent hits, and more obscure titles. For action fans, there’s Passtech Games’ recent roguelike Curse of the Dead Gods, while fans of skateboarding games can now access two games from EA’s Skate series, the 2007 original and 2010’s Skate 3.

Along with those older titles, players can get their hands on updated versions of classic titles with the puzzle game Lumines Remastered and the quirky Katamari Demacy Reroll. Rounding things off are a couple of more indie-flavored titles consisting of Starmancer, a sci-fi construction and management sim, and Dodgeball Academia, a game that offers players a more RPG-centric alternative to Knockout City.

Of course, these won’t be all that the service will have to offer this month. Several big hitters are slated to debut throughout August, most of which are new releases launching day one on Xbox Game Pass. These include the Xbox port of 2020’s acclaimed roguelike Hades (August 13), the time-bending thriller 12 Minutes (August 19), and the long-awaited sequel Psychonauts 2 (August 25). Add to that the new games that are already available and this month is shaping up to be a strong one for Game Pass.

That’s the good news. The bad news, unfortunately, is that a few of Game Pass’ biggest third-party titles are now slated to be removed from the service, and soon. Grand Theft Auto 5 will be leaving Game Pass on August 8, and in addition to Rockstar’s mega-hit, Final Fantasy 7 and Darksiders Genesis are slated to follow on August 16. It’s likely then that some fans will want to hold off on trying out the service’s new offerings in order to spend some more time with these games while they still can.
