Snake Eyes has a few people thinking it is a G.I. Joe spinoff, but Lorenzo di Bonaventura wonders why they don't understand it's a reboot.

While the Paramount movie Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins was met with mostly a warm reception by fans of the G.I. Joe franchise, the film's producer is baffled at how much those fans seem to have missed the point of the movie. Lorenzo di Bonaventura knows that people consider the film a spinoff of the first two G.I. Joe movies, but he wishes everyone understood that this Paramount project is all about resetting and rebooting the series.

Because Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins was both a standalone movie and an origin story, the assumption by many in the public is that it would lead into a third film in the original series. However, it appears that while di Bonaventura's movie could lead into a sequel that tells a larger G.I. Joe story, it won't be picking up the plot from the first two films and is rewriting the canon instead. Recently, di Bonaventura spoke to Uproxx about the misconception surrounding his work.

When the publication asked why people think Snake Eyes is a continuation and lead-in, rather than a way to start over, the director expressed his own confusion. He was specifically asked why the fact that it's a reboot was not put out there more. He responded that he simply doesn't know the answer.

Producer di Bonaventura also lamented that it's probably too late to get the messaging for Snake Eyes out there. People believe it to be a spinoff and that's how it's going to be seen for now. He did add that he thinks there might be some way to work on the messaging moving forward.

The producer was also asked whether or not he was worried about fans being angry that Snake Eyes speaks. He responded that he understands some people might have a problem with it, but there simply isn't all that much they could have done with the character if he didn't talk. He added that the reason he and Paramount wanted to do something with him was that he is one of the most popular characters in the G.I. Joe universe.

Because Snake Eyes does spin off the character from the first two movies, the director believes people have gotten the wrong idea. The fact is that the GI Joe character is getting a reboot himself. di Bonaventura said he thought it was important to get a more in-depth look at the heroic ninja and his feud with the eventual Cobra operative, Storm Shadow. That included having a character who is canonically mute actually speak in this feature film.
