Game of Thrones may be over, but as the folks from the Iron Islands would say, "what is dead may never die." Truly, HBO's fantasy series may live on forever, in one form or another. The epic fantasy series ran for eight seasons on HBO and racked up quite the fanbase in the process, and as you can see from this cosplayer, those fans are still eager to show their love for their favorite characters, like Daenerys Targaryen.
The cosplayer, who goes by the name BelovedCosplay, posted the image of themselves dressed as none other than the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen. However, BelovedCosplay has traded in Daenerys's infamous dragon companions for an adorable black cat, even captioning the image as "Mother of Cat." From the looks of it, this is also a rendition of Daenerys' Dothraki outfit, which was worn by the character in the first season after she was married off to Khal Drogo, the brutal Dothraki warlord portrayed by Aquaman star Jason Momoa. Portrayed by actress Emilia Clarke for all 8 seasons of the show, Daenerys quickly became one of the most popular characters on Game of Thrones. It was easy for audiences to sympathize with her because she was relatively young, out of her depths, and her conquest seemed noble, at first. Compared to many of the horrifying and violent characters introduced throughout the series (Burn in hell King Joffery/Ramsey Bolton) Daenerys was sympathetic and righteous. However, during the penultimate episode of the final season, things took a turn for the worse when the Mother of Dragons rained hellfire down on the innocent civilians of Kings Landing.
The decision to have Daenerys turn villain in the last moments of Game of Thrones was pretty controversial. Many fans felt that although she had proved herself to be violent and ruthless in the past, slaughtering hundreds of women and children for no reason seemed uncharacteristic. However, one could argue that showrunners D.B Weiss and David Benioff had been laying the groundwork for this heel turn throughout the series and that our desire to see Daenerys win the proverbial Game of Thrones was, in fact, part of the point.
Daenerys' conquest was always one that would end in bloodshed. She is from House Targaryen after all, a house that gave the people of Westeros the Mad King. At the end of the day, any character who actively wanted to be a leader on Game of Thrones usually wasn't the best fit for the job (something that often applies to the real world too). Maybe some fans were just upset because they had already named their now seven or eight-year-old daughters Daenerys and weren't too thrilled about their kids bearing the same name of the biggest mass murderers on the show.
While the series ended in 2019, author George R.R. Martin's seminal work will live on in Game of Thrones' many upcoming spinoffs and prequels, assuming they don't keep getting shut down by this neverending pandemic.
Until then, you can watch all eight seasons of Game of Thrones streaming on HBO Max.
