Respawn Entertainment is reportedly 'committed to delivering' cross-progression to Apex Legends, but says the feature is still a ways off.

It seems like cross-progression for Apex Legends won't be until 2022, according to Respawn Entertainment. Unfortunately for fans who have been asking for the feature since the battle royale shooter was released, adding cross-progression to the game is harder than some might think.

A completed Reddit AMA with Respawn Entertainment director of communication Ryan Rigney saw plenty of answered questions regarding the recently released Apex Legends Season 10 as well as the future of the game. When it came to talking about the addition of cross-progression, a frequently requested feature, Rigney said that it would be coming "next year."

The AMA was, fortunately, able to shed some light on why cross-progression for Apex has taken so long to be added. According to Rigney, cross-progression is "gnarly as hell in terms of being a problem to solve." He details the feature's challenges as being multifaceted. Not only does the studio need to figure out the technical aspect of merging accounts, but there are also legal issues that surfaced due to the different publishing rules that different platforms have. Additionally, he adds that "different regions have different laws. It's a mess."

Respawn has been promising cross-progression in Apex Legends for a while, but there hasn't been much of a timeline for when it's expected to be added. Rigney said that it's coming next year, however, as he detailed, there's a lot more to it than simply adding the feature. He concluded his answer by saying that the team is "committed to delivering it." It's clear that Respawn hasn't given up on trying to add the feature, but that there's still plenty more work to be done on it if it still won't be ready until 2022 at the very earliest.

In addition to talking about the addition of cross-play, Rigney also answered a question regarding PS5 and Xbox Series X|S updates for Apex, another frequently requested feature. He said that he couldn't say much about it, but that it's in development and that Respawn is "excited about it" as well. Unlike in his answer about cross-progression, he didn't provide a timeline about when an update is due, so fans have speculated that it's coming relatively soon.

The AMA addressed several other issues including questions regarding balance updates coming to the newest Legend, Seer. Apex Legends Season 10: Emergence started last week, so it's likely that the new content added to the game is all the major additions coming this season. There are plenty of changes for Apex Season 10, so hopefully, they'll whet fans' appetites until something even bigger like a next-gen console update comes along.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
