Lucifer's final season is gearing up to drop on Netflix, and a suitably off-the-walls trailer has been released ahead of its premiere.

The upcoming 6th and final season of Netflix's Lucifer (formerly FOX's Lucifer) is finally upon its legions of mere mortal fans, and it feels like it would take an actual celestial being to figure out exactly what's going on in its newly released trailer. Of course, since this is Lucifer, it tends to bode well when things start to look particularly wacky. So if that's the case here, then this is going to be one H-E-double hockey sticks of a good time.

From an opening shot that strangely looks like the house in The Munsters to an actual cartoon segment (those are so hot right now), this trailer has it all for anyone looking to be both excited and confused. Of course, after the explosive and heart-wrenching finale of the previous season, it's only natural that the true conclusion would crank things up to 666. But odds are most people didn't expect most of what shows up in the preview, even after that bafflingly wonderful musical episode. Take a close look, because the devil's in the details.

So here's where things are in the Lucifer universe. The morally gray Lucifer himself (Tom Ellis) has been elected as the new God, along with all the responsibilities that come with it. But that isn't all he has to worry about. Fans out there who still haven't stopped sobbing will remember that Detective Dan Espinoza (Kevin Alejandro) tragically died at the end of last season, followed by the discovery that his soul hadn't gone to Heaven. So aside from his new duties, it looks as though Lucifer plans to take a trip down to his old stamping ground of Hell to rescue his regularly insulted friend. Dan even appears multiple times in the trailer, offering a glimmer of hope to fans. Not bad for a character who never even appeared in the original Lucifer DC comics.

Based on the scenes shown in the trailer, it looks as though Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) will accompany Lucifer on this journey, eventually turning them both into cartoons. Apparently, the whole cartoon thing is "in" right now, as evidenced by a recent DC's Legends of Tomorrow episode that featured a similar twist. But that's not all that happens in Hell, because it also looks as though a new adversary has joined the fray, and she has a hankering for some Devil killing. Also, there's the apocalypse, because of course that's happening too.

The trailer really jumps around, hardly giving viewers time to understand what they saw even after multiple viewings. But honestly, that may be part of the fun. After everything the show has done over the years, from being saved from cancellation by superfans to introducing and literally retiring God himself, everything left is bound to be one surprise after another. If people could figure all that out from the trailer, what would be the point?

Take a few runs through the trailer and see what can be gleaned. A new God, the apocalypse, cartoons, old friends, new enemies, and everything in between all seem to be in store for those ready to venture in next season. Luckily, fans won't have too long before it premieres.

The 6th and final season of Lucifer will premiere September 10th on Netflix.
