The Guardians of the Galaxy director would be up for making a show all about fans' favorite wild space criminals

James Gunn is one busy director these days. Gunn's latest film The Suicide Squad just hit theatres and has been mostly well-received. Gunn has also been gearing up to starts filming the long-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is supposed to begin filming later this year. He's also currently working on the Suicide Squad spin-off show, Peacemaker. Now Gunn has another idea for a project that could add even more to his production plate.

Fans may remember The Ravagers from both Guardians of the Galaxy films. The Ravagers were a riotous band of thieves, smugglers, and criminals who spent a lot of time double-crossing each other and butting heads with the Guardians members. They could be charming, funny, and sometimes a little scary, but no matter their mood fans mostly agreed that they were fun to watch. Gunn agrees, because he's now revealing that he thinks there are plenty of stories to explore with that group.

In an interview for the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, Gunn revealed that he has long thought that The Ravagers would make for a great television show. Gunn first ran the idea for a show past Kevin Feige while they stood aboard the Ravager's ship during filming on the first Guardians movie. "I always thought The Ravagers would be a great show," Gunn said, "Whether that was with Sly Stallone's Ravagers or even more in-depth with just the pirates and what they were doing."

Gunn then says that Feige responded by saying that if the first Guardians movie was a hit, then Gunn could do whatever he wanted. Of course, MCU fans all know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1 surprised the world and became one of Marvel's most beloved films. Similarly, Vol. 2 was a huge success. With Disney Plus being the new place for innovative Marvel content, a show about The Ravagers would fit in perfectly.

The Ravagers spent most of the first Guardians film antagonizing the unlikely heroes, but they played a much bigger, emotional role in the second film. Yondu (Michael Rooker), the leader of the Ravagers group the films follow, played a major part in Peter Quill's (Chris Pratt) story. Yondu's character blossomed from a ne'er-do-well criminal into the father figure Peter had always wanted. The second film fleshed out The Ravagers, their relationship with the Guardians, and everything fans thought they knew about the group. This is pretty solid proof that much could be done with a whole show about the group of criminals.

Time will tell if Gunn ever gets his wish and makes a show about the Ravagers. Until then, fans have plenty to look forward to from the director. Before Gunn unleashes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023, he will release the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. This forty-minute mini holiday film will be canon, so fans will need to see it before they take in Vol. 3. Gunn has also promised fans that the franchise's third film will be "gigantic," tell Rocket's full story, and feature a heavier plot than the previous films. Fans clearly have a lot to look forward to.

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is slated for release on Disney Plus in December 2022.
