One of the main problems with pay-to-win items is that they often make the rest of the game a tedious slog, forcing users to buy items with real money rather than wait for arbitrary wait periods to end. Pokemon GO is different.

User VoltasPistol pointed out the game's lack of a premium currency, the ability to earn that currency without paying for it, and the lack of a cooldown period on the entire game in a thread. All things summed up, the game treats play-for-free players the same as it does pay-to-win players.

9 Pokemon World Theme Song > Gotta Catch 'Em All

The "Pokemon World" theme song, used in the show's second season, is a far more bombastic song than the franchise's original melody. "Gotta Catch Em All" is catchy and recognizable, but Reddit user TheJamaicanGamer points out that it's not a good song at heart.

The main problem, they point out, is that the original song is just a Saturday morning TV show theme song. "Pokemon World," though, is a good, re-listenable song in its own right – even if it didn't quite match the childlike vibe of the anime.

8 Battling and PvP Are The Worst Parts of Pokemon

Pokemon is known for a lot of things, but number one amongst everything else has to be its turn-based battle system involving hundreds of unique combatants. It's not the best part of the games, though, according to some.

User Worldsapart30 commented on a thread dedicated to unpopular Pokemon opinions to echo this sentiment. For them, the games could thrive with the addition of open-ended mechanics like farming, a good breeding system, and even an updated Poke Pelago.

7 There Don't Have To Be So Many New Pokemon

The number of pokemon in the Pokemon franchise is well over 1000 by now. It's a more than 20-year-old series, and every single one of the dozens of entries over the years has introduced countless new creatures to the mix.

User UmemployedNeet argues that there doesn't have to be such a reliance on new Pokemon for modern entries. They blamed the mass production of the series for the lack of originality in new Pokemon, and said that new content doesn't just mean new wacky designs.

6 No National Pokedex Is A Boon For Sword and Shield

The controversy over the removal of the National Pokedex for Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield was huge. Fans had been so used to being able to transfer over old Pokemon from other games that suddenly being unable to stirred the fanbase up.

Reddit user MigBird, though, argues that it's actually a good thing that the game didn't have a National Pokedex. They pointed out that because the game is isolated from the rest it is not as overwhelming for newcomers. It proved unpopular indeed, as the user then edited their post to reflect on the community backlash.

5 The Old Sprites Are Better Than 3D Models

Classic video game sprites have stood the test of time for their design, despite the limitations of gaming systems of old. Reddit user ThermalFlask argued that the modernized 3D sprites and models used in recent entries don't stand up to the original, 2D pixelated designs.

There's just something about the classics that makes them so hard to improve upon. As one of the most popular posts in the Pokemon subreddit, it seems this sentiment rang truer than expected among fans of the series.

4 Black and White Was The Peak For Pokemon

Pokemon Black and Pokemon White made up the fifth generation of the Pokemon series and are the only entries in the series with direct sequels (Black 2 and White 2). However, the games are not super well regarded among fans.

User Cyokie_Revott noted that it was actually a high point for the series thanks to its fresh additions to the formula. They specifically pointed out the games' use of moving sprites, the music, the diversity of Pokemon in the Unova region, and the main villain, N.

3 The Pokemon Contests Should Make A Comeback

Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire and Pokemon Diamond & Pearl had a unique minigame no other entry in the Pokemon series has brought back;  the Pokemon Contests. In these contests, players put their pokemon up for review in four different categories and are graded based on their performance.

Reddit user Composinkid88 argued that they should be brought back because they, along with the Wild Area, are the funniest things to do in the series and would be done justice in modern Pokemon games.

2 Sword and Shield's Raids Are Monotonous

Raids in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are special events that take place in the Wild Area, time-gated to about three or four days each month. User RepublicanSans argues that the Raid system is flawed because it's too difficult with CPUs and too easy with other players.

They also pointed out that Shiny Pokemon are way too easy to get via Raids. There's less of a sense of wonder when you are practically guaranteed to get one each day of the event, after all.

1 Inanimate Object Pokemon Help Establish A Sense of Wonder

If there is one resounding complaint with the design of modern pokemon, it's that too many look like uninteresting, inanimate objects. Pokemon like Trubbish and Vanilluxe have been lambasted online for being unbelievable – which some fans see as a strange complaint for a fantasy world of battling mini-monsters.

Users Nitasu987 and NumbuhOne argued that including Pokemon that look like regular everyday items helps to establish a sense of wonder in the player. Where else could you have an actual garbage bag as a companion, after all?
