Players can bring their virtual avatars to many worlds in VRChat and these ones shouldn't be missed.

VRChat has become one of the most popular VR games of all time in a very short time period, Sure, VR has only been marketable for a short while, but nevertheless, VRChat has solidified itself as one of those games everybody with access to virtual reality needs to play.

One of the best parts of the game is the amount of customization potential. Sure, one can change their avatar and roleplay as any number of popular and original characters, but perhaps the most impressive aspect of the game is the custom VRChat worlds coming out of the game's map-making community.

Updated August 16, 2021 by Erik Petrovich: A big part of the VRChat experience is the social aspect. Meeting new people online, even under the guise of one of the game's countless avatars, is pretty much the entire point. There are lots of maps out there that are specifically designed for encouraging players to interact with one another, even small worlds like Sky Camp or Midnight Rooftop.

Ultimately, it's best to play on worlds where there are lots of other people to hang out with – one can easily lose track of time mingling with strangers and making new friends, especially on maps with specific game modes or minigames.

14 Any World With Lots Of Players

The most important thing about selecting a world in VRChat is how many players are active on worlds one is interested in joining. An interesting world, perhaps one with minigames or a unique game mode, is made less interesting when there are only a few players online.

Be sure to keep a few maps in mind when browsing the listings and join those with high player counts to have the best experience in-game possible. VRChat is perfectly enjoyable without being too social, but chatting with others is ultimately baked into the name – it's an experience made all the better when shared with others, even if they're complete strangers.

13 Firelink Shrine

The Firelink Shrine world is a surprisingly faithful recreation of the iconic location from Dark Souls that serves as the anchor location for the player's adventure. It's a much larger map than many of the worlds available in VRChat and contains a variety of hidden secrets for fans of the franchise.

For instance, by falling to the bottom of the world behind the ruined area where an elevator would normally be, players are greeted with an all-black room with the red text "YOU DIED" emblazoned in the air. By resetting their starting position, they can get back to the bonfire location – just like in Dark Souls, death isn't a permanent thing in VRChat.

12 Sky Camp

Sky Camp is a smaller map with a few different areas available to explore in its vibrant, cartoony world. The main appeal of this map, though, is the potential for meeting new people. The comfortably lit main campfire area is a great place to get to know the real people behind the wacky avatars.

It's much more stylized than most VRChat worlds, which tend to go for realism over aesthetic. The world tends to have a low allowance for players, though, so even though it's one of the best VRChat worlds for chatting, there's usually a low max player limit.

11 Midnight Rooftop

The Midnight Rooftop map is a complete 180 from Sky Camp, in that it's a realistic depiction of a top-floor apartment at night. It's a gorgeously designed map with small details placed everywhere and includes a distant view on the city below to really add to its urban feel.

Midnight Rooftop, like many maps in VRChat, is designed for being social with other players. There are several sitting areas for talking as well as mini-games to play together beset in its dimly lit setting. It is a small-ish map, though, so consider bringing in people you already know or joining a server without too much of a crowd.

10 The Great Pug

The Great Pug is one of those VR worlds that everybody has seen. Streamers spend a lot of time there, content creators feature the well-designed location in countless videos, and it's a location ripe for fun RP or just to relax with other people.

The Great Pug is a classic pub with a bar, drinks, tables, food, and lots of things to interact with. In VR, it's even a place to show off your juggling skills – just be careful not to mess up anybody's drinks, if you're roleplaying as a bartender.

9 Zombie Tag Worlds

Zombie Tag in VRChat works much as it does in real life. One person starts out "it", they tag someone, then they too become "it". The game continues until everybody has succumbed to the plague of being "it".

In VRChat this game is brought to a whole new level with lots of custom maps for players to get Zombie Tag games going. Just search for the game mode and look for a server with lots of people to play one of the best VRChat games.

8 Freeze Tag Worlds

Freeze Tag and Zombie Tag are birds of a feather. Where Zombie tag is about converting everybody into a tagger, Freeze Tag is all about stopping people from moving until nobody can move or rescue each other from being "frozen".

Much like with Zombie Tag, look for Freeze Tag worlds by searching for the game mode on the Worlds tab. Make sure to pick a world with a high population so you have someone to play with!

7 Big Al's Avatar Corridors

Big Al's Avatar Corridors is not necessarily a map that you visit to relax or play a game or anything like that. Instead, it's more like a museum of costumes where you get to try on and bring home the display.

Big Al's Avatar Corridors is absolutely stuffed with custom player models that the player can view, try on, and even download. They're all fully rigged, too, so they won't look too weird when you talk to other people. It's not one of the most social VR Chat worlds, but it's great for finding a new look.

6 Deathrun Worlds

Deathrunning is a game mode that goes way back to the beginning of Garry's Mod and the source engine. Essentially, one player (Death) sets off traps on a path that the other players must traverse to get to the end. If a player gets hit with a trap, they lose and don't get an opportunity to beat Death.

It works the exact same way in VRChat, and it's one of the most fun VRChat worlds available period. There's a huge variety of maps with more being made every week, and they're getting crazier and crazier as time goes on.

5 Japan Shrine

The Japan Shrine is a lovely meditative place to be in the virtual world. It's a spring setting with Cherry Blossom trees gently swaying in the wind and a pale blue sky above, and the Shrine is home to many traditional rooms and relaxing areas to be in all inspired by Japanese architecture and traditional homes.

The original Japan Shrine was unfortunately taken down by its creator soon after its release, but other imitations have cropped up that do a good job of rendering the same scene.

4 The Black Cat

The Black Cat is an Oculus Quest-only world that functions as an event space in the virtual world. It has two performance stages, two bars, a restaurant, multiple private areas, and even separate bathrooms with mirrors.

It's one of the most popular VRchat game worlds that one might recognize after watching countless YouTube videos that take place in the establishment. Many streamers and content creators use The Black Cat as a "home base" and a place to interact with their fans due to its homely aesthetics.

3 The Devouring

The Devouring is one of the most unique VRChat worlds because it's not a hangout space or a game space at all. Instead, The Devouring brings the horror genre to VRChat and even works as a co-op adventure.

The Devouring starts after a road trip gone wrong, and up to four players can traverse the nearly 6-hour-long campaign. It's been rightfully compared to indie horror games from recent years and is perhaps the most well-known horror world in VRChat.

2 Where Spheres Touch

Where Spheres Touch is not a map for the faint of heart or the faint of mind. It's a psychedelic journey through consciousness depicted in virtual reality, and it's absolutely massive. One could spend hours here getting sucked into the eye candy and intricate designs of this trippy world.

Funnily enough, the original world was so popular that the creator released a sequel, Where Spheres Touch II, that expands the world and changes much about the psychedelia witnessed therein.

1 Sled Hill

Sled Hill is an absolutely hilariously fun time in VRChat for one reason: it's the number one thing that causes people to fall over in VRChat. Normally, the camera and controls are very user-friendly, but riding a Sled is a different story.

There was originally only one Sled Hill map, but just searching for the "sled" tag on the Worlds tab should bring up a variety of worlds where you can sled down huge hills, even when it's not cold outside!
