The Destiny franchise has always contained different types of content in an effort to appeal to any level of gamer. In addition to the Destiny 2 story campaigns, the Crucible PvP modes, and other activities, Bungie has prided itself on providing varied amount of content at different levels of difficulty. Some of the game's more difficult activities such as Nightfalls and Raids, could only be attempted by groups of people already in a fireteam as the matchmaking would be disabled by default.
For most activities, the level of difficulty was largely governed by a specific number, typically generated from the level of the player's gear currently equipped. Missions and activities would warn players that they should be a specific level before attempting due to the level of enemies and active modifiers to provide an extra level of challenge. Some activities such as the previously mentioned Raids and Nightfalls also came with their own difficulty modifiers like Grandmaster that could be selected prior to starting, typically adding new variables, modifiers, and enemy types, though giving players more rewards for over coming the difficulties.

During the Witch Queen reveal stream, Bungie announced an evolution of the game's difficulty system with Legendary Mode. Name dropping specific franchises like Titanfall, DOOM, and Halo, Bungie has developed Legendary Mode to be the ultimate challenge for campaign players. Not only do enemies hit harder, but respawns have been heavily restricted, forcing players to play with more care. Better yet, the difficulty scales based on how many players are in the fireteam. So while it'll still provide a challenge for solo players, a party of four should prepare for a struggle.
While the challenge may be too great for certain Destiny 2 players, Bungie has promised that those who are able to make it through will be well compensated for their time. Unfortunately, the details on what kind of rewards can be expected wasn't divulged. With the Witch Queen expansion still a few months away, players will likely learn more as the content nears launch.
In addition to a new challenge, Bungie also pulled the curtain back on other new features coming with the expansion. One of the highlights was weapon crafting, a completely new feature for the franchise and likely goes hand in hand with the current weapon infusion system for powering up gear. While Bungie didn't go into specifics, the crafting system will ultimately allow players to make their own weapons while also improving them over time.
