Cerberus requires a specific item at the Temple of Styx in order to move and let players pass to take on the final boss of Hades.

There aren’t a lot of opportunities to get stuck on anything but the combat in Hades, as it is designed to guide players on a fairly straightforward path. The Supergiant Games developed title might give players the option of what reward they want for clearing a chamber, but there are no areas to get lost in after making this choice.

However, after defeating the third bosses, Theseus and Asterius, players will be met by Cerberus just before exiting the Temple of Styx. Zagreus must then find something to give to his adorable three-headed dog to get it to move.

What to Give Cerberus in the Temple of Styx

Hades may seem to be hinting that players must buy something from Charon’s expensive wares, but they actually need to find a Fetid Sack in order to move Cerberus.

Unfortunately, finding this item relies on luck. Players must first head to the west path, where they will find five path options awaiting them. As Hades is a roguelike, all of these chambers are randomized.

Whatever door is picked, players will have to complete every chamber on its path for the chance to spawn the Fetid Sack. The probability of finding this key item is completely random. It has the same chance to spawn after one full path is completed as it does after all five are bested.

These chambers contain enemies that can poison Zagreus, so make sure to heal at the Mandragora Statues found in every room, if close to death during a battle. At the end of a chamber, Zagreus will automatically be cured of his poisoned status.

After completing each path, a portal can be stepped on that sends Zagreus back to the beginning area with Charon, and his three-headed dog, which can net players an achievement for petting Cerberus in the House of Hades.

If players are unfortunate enough that they have to clear four or five paths before finding the Fetid Sack, they will at least have built up more Obols to spend at Charon’s shop. Buying the strongest boons in Hades will give players a greater chance of defeating the last boss.

What Door to Pick First in the Temple of Styx

Even though the probability of finding the required item is completely random, there is a certain order that will make the search quicker and easier when attempting multiple runs.

To find the Fetid Sack quickly in Hades, players should choose the doors that don’t have a skull symbol on them. This symbol indicates that a miniboss is waiting at the end of the path instead of the regular group of strong enemies.

Leaving these rooms to the end of a search means the minibosses can be avoided entirely if players find the sack early. It also means that if these smaller boss fights need to be completed, players can receive the rewards from these easier paths before attempting the tougher fights.

Hades is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
