A Twitch streamer and GTA roleplayer begins a charity bike ride across the United States in memory of NoPixel players who have passed.

The NoPixel server has grown into Grand Theft Auto Online's largest roleplaying server. Thanks to the contributions of a dedicated group of developers and player donations, NoPixel features an extensively modded version of GTA Online that allows gamers to create their own characters and take on a range of roles, from gang members to judges to used car salesmen. A diverse community now inhabits the unique and thriving world of NoPixel, which has attracted a number of Twitch and YouTube content creators as well.

As with any community, friendships have developed over the years and some players on the NoPixel server became mainstays in the game. With a community as large as NoPixel’s, however, unfortunate events inevitably occur and some familiar faces are no longer seen. A memorial wall has been placed in Legion Square with the names of deceased NoPixel members, the latest being Misty “DovahPug” Mocha, who passed away in May 2021 after a long fight with cancer.

The three other names on the memorial wall are David “itsStarkey” Chris, Boe “Blue622” Jangles, and Michael “CallMeGrub” Dias, who all passed in 2020. On August 23, another NoPixel member set out to ride a bike from Philadelphia to San Francisco in honor of the four deceased players. Kimchi, known for his character Sun Moon, estimates that the nearly 3,300-mile journey will take over 40 days to complete, ending around October 2. He plans to livestream the entire trip and hopes to raise $100,000 for charity.

The three charities reflect the illnesses that affected the four NoPixel members that have passed: The Cancer Support Community, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, and The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Kimchi explained his motivation for the charity event on Twitter. “If I didn’t set up this goal two years ago, my name would probably be written on that wall… Our friends might have passed away and moved on to better things. However, we’re still here and we need to remember their struggle, so others don’t have to go through the same.”

The memorial wall in Legion Square has been decorated with a few items that the GTA Online NoPixel members were known for. There’s a lifeguard surfboard for CallMeGrub, which is a reference to the lifeguard antics he got up to with another NoPixel player. A hat hanging from one of the crosses is a callback to CallMeGrub’s character Michael Dias, who was a deputy for the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office. There is also a blue heart for Blue622, a sledgehammer for Misty Mocha, and a sign with itsStarkey’s catchphrase, “What’s gooood?”

NoPixel has an official Wiki that logs significant locations and all of the characters on the server, along with details such as birthdate, physical attributes, and backstory. There is also an official forum where those interested can apply to join the server. Because keeping NoPixel up and running requires quite a bit of manpower and money behind the scenes, the applications of those who donate will be processed faster.
