Following its surprise announcement during Nintendo's E3 2021 showcase, Metroid Dread has given fans of the franchise something to look forward to later this year. Because the game was announced so close to its launch, though, fans were worried that a lot of information might still be missing about certain elements of the game leading up to its release.

Metroid Dread Development History
As many fans were quick to point out, the idea for Metroid Dread has been around since 2005. Most assumed that it would never come out, as the project had gone quiet in favor of 3D entries in the series like Metroid Prime and Metroid: The Other M. The development history video that Nintendo showed off following its E3 2021 showcase gives an in-depth look into where the game has been for the past 16 years. Metroid Dread's producer Yoshio Sakamoto goes into further detail about the game's journey during the six-minute video.
Metroid Dread Nintendo Treehouse Live
Immediately following Nintendo's E3 showcase, the company held a new Treehouse Live that featured interviews with developers and extended gameplay previews for titles like Mario Golf: Super Rush and Metroid Dread. The footage shown essentially breaks down exactly how the game will play and what fans can expect from Samus' new pursuers. The footage also points out that Metroid Dread will be ending the story started with the original Metroid. It's currently unclear what that means for the rest of the franchise, but Nintendo assured fans that Metroid Prime 4 is still in development and hasn't been canceled.
Metroid Dread - Another Glimpse of Dread
This roughly two-minute teaser was posted to the official Nintendo YouTube page and offers a little bit more background on what Metroid Dread's story will be like. Based on the video, it seems like the game will revolve around the X Parasite and how seven EMMI robots were lost trying to retrieve it. The video also confirmed that Samus' Varia Suit will be back in Dread in some capacity, accompanying the unnamed white suit that's been featured in the rest of the game's footage.
Metroid Dread Trailer 2
Although it's pretty brief, a lot of Metroid Dread is shown off in the latest trailer for the game. More of its story seems to be on display as well as a handful of returning Metroid characters like Kraid. Additionally, the trailer displays many of the abilities that Samus will unlock over the course of the game as well as some footage of the bounty hunter's Gravity Suit, which hadn't been seen up to this point. With Samus' many suits and upgrades being so iconic, it'll be interesting to see what makes it into the finalized version of the game.
Metroid Dread releases on October 8, 2021, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
