The Unity Engine is capable of breathing new life into old games, as one user shows with a clip of what Elder Scrolls: Oblivion would look like today.

When used with such finesse, the Unreal Engine can be a force to be reckoned with. As one of the world's leading video game development engines, it has been used to create so many fan favorites, not to mention being utilized by the community for modding purposes. For example, recently, footage emerged showing what a first-person iteration of Resident Evil would look like in Unreal. Now, another fan has emerged showing what the visuals for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion are like when reimagined in more modern software.

Uploading footage to YouTube a couple of days ago, modder Greg Coulthard has been showing his work on Oblivion when remade in Unreal Engine 5. The result is a splendidly updated take on the 15-year-old epic fantasy RPG. The description for the video says the render was done in real-time on a fairly powerful PC. They also added that the face for the main character is their own, before adding that the video is meant for display purposes and that there is no version of this modded game available to download.

The footage is a very impressive take on the Elder Scrolls title, which originally came out in 2006. This is a project which Coulthard has apparently been working on a for a few months now, and the uploaded video represents the latest stage of development. In a way, it sits side-by-side with another fan remake, which is currently in development. The Skyblivion mod rebuilds Elder Scrolls 4 in the Skyrim engine, so this and Coulthard's efforts are two equally stunning projects that show off not only the sheer talent present in the community, but also how much the fan base would seemingly like to see Oblivion remade for this generation.

One thing that's been said about the Oblivion Unreal remake is that it utilizes assets from the original game, according to a report, although the textures have been overhauled for that modern day look. Oblivion is just one of those games that's screaming for a remaster or a remake, and it seems as though Coulthard, and those responsible for Skyblivion, are taking it upon themselves to actualize what the fans are after.

Not to mention the fact that Elder Scrolls games are forever being modded by the community. While many are happy to utilize each game's own engine in order to improve on the original formula, Greg has taken that next step by going straight for the Unreal Engine, which is versatile and capable of breathing new life into a game that's a decade and a half old by now.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 and backward compatible on PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
