This coming Thursday, September 9 at 1pm PT, Sony will be hosting the highly-anticipated PlayStation Showcase event where it will reveal new games coming to both PS4 and PS5. As is typical of these big events, the rumors have started flowing about what exactly Sony might reveal at the showcase, with credible leakers suggesting that the new God of War game will be one of the titles that are shown off. Now a new rumor from another credible leaker has suggested that another game that might be at the PlayStation Showcase is a new Infamous title.
Leaker Shpeshal_Nick, who has accurately leaked video game news in the past, has said that there is "a chance" that Infamous will make its long-awaited return at the PlayStation Showcase. Nick cautioned that he was unable to verify these claims and so Infamous fans should take this rumor with a massive grain of salt. However, as pointed out by GamesRadar, there may be more to this rumor than meets the eye.

One reason why this new Infamous game rumor is picking up steam is because Sony renewed the Infamous webpage domain just last year. Combine that with Sony's insistence that it will never retire the Infamous IP, and it does stand to reason that the open world superhero franchise could make a comeback at some point down the line, even if it's nowhere to be seen at the PlayStation Showcase on Thursday.
The Infamous franchise has been dormant since 2014, but it was once of PlayStation's most heavily-pushed series. Infamous, Infamous 2, and the Festival of Blood expansion all earned critical acclaim on PS3, while Infamous: Second Son was one of the first PS4 exclusives ever released. The standalone expansion Infamous: First Light is the last anyone's seen of the series, as developer Sucker Punch has been busy with other projects.
Instead of diving into a new Infamous game after First Light, Sucker Punch turned its attention to making an original IP. Just as it changed course drastically in the transition between Sly Cooper and Infamous, Sucker Punch decided to do something completely different with its next title, the open world samurai game Ghost of Tsushima. With Ghost of Tsushima having launched just last year and Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut merely weeks old at this point, one might think it's far too early for a new Infamous game to be revealed, if one exists at all.
It's true that Sucker Punch has been plenty busy with Ghost of Tsushima, but there's always the possibility that another team at the studio has been working on a new Infamous game. Of course, Sony could also hand the IP over to another one of its development studios if it so desires, which is exactly what it did with Sucker Punch's Sly Cooper series back in the day. Whatever the case may be, fans will just have to tune in to the PlayStation Showcase on Thursday, September 9 at 1pm PT, but they shouldn't get their hopes up too high.
