While Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is promising, it is only the beginning, as the Borderlands franchise seems to have a bright future ahead of it.

Those interested in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands will not have to wait much longer for a closer look at the game. Recently, Gearbox teased that Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands gameplay was imminent, and while a date was not specified, it can be expected very soon. When it does come, it may bring a specific release date as opposed to the early 2022 window that has currently been announced.

However, next year will also be bringing the Borderlands movie, which is a clear example of the franchise branching out beyond the world of video games. Comics and novels have released while a Borderlands tabletop game is on the way, showing that the series is growing rapidly. With another mainline game likely in the works, and more spinoffs always being a possibility, fans have a lot to look forward to.

Borderlands In 2022: Wonderlands And The Borderlands Movie

Obviously, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is Gearbox’s focus at the moment. Set shortly after Borderlands 2, Tina is once again tiny, and the game will see players thrust into a world made by the enthusiastic youngster. Like the excellent Assault on Dragon Keep DLC, Wonderlands will pull heavily from fantasy franchises, with Tina serving as the dungeon master for the story. With a unique multi-class system, melee weapons, and spellcasting, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands should be a crowd pleaser.

However, it is not the only big Borderlands project set to release next year. While it remains to be seen if the film will be a solid adaptation of the source material, as the Borderlands movie seems to be changing some big things, it will be interesting at the very least. Though the casting of Kevin Hart as Roland may have caused controversy, Cate Blanchett’s Lilith and Jack Black’s Claptrap were more warmly received. It remains to be seen if the film is good or bad, but the fact that it exists shows that the franchise has reached new heights when it comes to its popularity and mainstream appeal.

Borderlands Beyond 2022: Borderlands 4, More Movies, And Potential Spinoffs

According to rumors, Borderlands 4 may be in development, something that should not surprise many fans. Though there is hype for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, its status as a prequel means that it is unlikely to tackle any of the big plot threads left hanging at the end of Borderlands 3. Alongside next-gen consoles giving the series a chance to evolve, a fourth Borderlands game will likely follow up on the Director’s Cut cliffhanger and show a new group of Vault Hunters helping Ava track down Lilith.

Outside of a new mainline Borderlands game, there is the possibility of the movie leading to a proper series of its own. Assuming that it does well at the box office, it is possible that sequels are released. It is easy to imagine Handsome Jack being used as a post credits stinger to build excitement for a potential sequel that may or may not happen. If the movie does do well, though, the Borderlands universe’s many characters and stories could all be adapted on the big screen, with several years’ worth of film ideas on the table.

Outside of Borderlands 4 and potential movie sequels, the possibility of more spin-off games like Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands should not be ruled out. Alongside a new IP, Gearbox’s recently announced Montreal studio will be working on the Borderlands franchise. Assuming Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands proves more successful than Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, similar character-focused spin-offs could be released, with this new studio at the helm. A separate game focused on Zer0, FL4K, and a few other numbered assassins could be extremely interesting, diving headfirst into a mysterious corner of the Borderlands universe. Equally appealing would be a prequel focusing on the Siren Nyriad or a new story starring Tales From The Borderlands’ Fiona.

With so many options for spinoffs alongside the next main game, as well as the potential for the movie to spawn some sequels, a lot more Borderlands content may be coming. More tabletop games are a possibility, too, especially with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands likely to be even more popular than Assault on Dragon Keep was. New comics and novels are likely, and there is always potential for Gearbox to move away from the shooter looter genre and try something risky like a Borderlands MMO. While some or none of these things may come, the pattern thus far implies that future Borderlands content could take several forms – and that is truly exciting.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands releases in 2022 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
