Trainers can catch an Inkay during the Psychic Spectacular Event in Pokemon GO, but what's the trick to evolving the Kalos native?

Quick Links

September is a stacked month for Pokemon GO, and one of its many events includes the Psychic Spectacular. This yearly research chain offers trainers the chance to catch new and old Psychic-types.

One of the new character additions is the Dark/Psychic dual-type, Inkay. This revolving Pokemon was first introduced in Pokemon X and Y, and evolving it required players to do a very specific task. This technique is replicated in Pokemon GO.

How to Get Inkay in Pokemon GO

Before trainers evolve Inkay, they first have to find the Kalos Pokemon and earn enough Candy. As part of the Psychic Spectacular September event, Inkay will have an increased spawn rate in the wild. Using an Incense will increase the spawn rate of Inkay, and the item has increased effectiveness during the Pokemon GO Season of Mischief event—boosted even further while walking.

Other ways to get Inkay include:

  • In Raids
  • While taking a Pokemon GO snapshot once a day
  • Completing the Psychic Spectacular event research
  • Completing the Field Research ‘Evolve one Inkay’

How to Evolve Inkay into Malamar in Pokemon GO

Players need 50 Inkay Candy to evolve it into Malamar. Obtaining the Candy can be sped up by using Pinap Berries while catching one. Trainers can also make Inkay their buddy to earn candy or use Rare Candy instead.

The next step might have some trainers stumped, as there is a question mark next to the evolve button when attempting to turn Inkay into Malamar in Pokemon GO. Players of the mainline games might remember that to evolve the Kalos Pokemon, they must turn the console upside down.

The tradition continues, and trainers must turn their phone upside down to evolve Inkay into Malamar in Pokemon GO. This quirky method might seem weird, but it reflects the dual nature of the Dark and Psychic-type Pokemon.

This is not an event-exclusive trick, and turning the phone upside down will always be required to evolve Inkay into Malamar. Luckily, the technique fits well with mobile devices, as they are easily flipped. In contrast, console users have had problems with extra controllers causing errors and getting the timing just right.

Trainers have until the end of the Spectacular Psychic Event on September 13 (8 pm local time) to easily catch an Inkay. After this, it will be available in the wild but at a significantly reduced spawn rate.

Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS devices.
