Furiosa fans have to wait longer for the anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road prequel film now that the Anya Taylor-Joy project has been delayed.

The upcoming Furiosa prequel film will be pushed back another year, so it won't come out until 2024. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Imperator Furiosa during her younger years and will be a follow-up to 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road.

Mad Max takes place in a post-apocalyptic society that's set in Australia and follows Max Rockatansky, who lost his wife and child and now wanders the lone world surviving. He only allows himself to help lone pockets of civilization, mainly for self-interest, but often becoming more selfless. Max is known for going through intense moments of combat and dangerous situations, which puts this series amongst action fans' favorite movies.

Taylor-Joy will portray a younger version of Furiosa, who was played by Charlize Theron in 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. Furiosa started out as an antagonist war captain until turning against Immortan Joe and freeing his "five wives" before joining forces with the protagonist Max. She is a very deadly warrior in combat, and many fans were curious to see her upbringing and how she became a skilled combatant. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. has announced that fans will now have to wait until May 24th, 2024, to learn her backstory in Furiosa.

In addition to Taylor-Joy, the movie will also star Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Avengers) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Candyman), but their roles have yet to be confirmed. George Miller will be coming back to both direct and co-write the script with returning screenwriter Nico Lathouris, so fans can expect a cohesive Mad Max story that will follow the vision of the original creator.

Mad Max: Fury Road did very well in terms of critical and commercial reception, and it also won six Academy Awards for costume design, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, production design, sound editing, and sound mixing. The film is a popular pop culture icon with a niche following, so for it to do that well at the Academy is a feat of its own.

Taylor-Joy can be seen in the Netflix limited series The Queen's Gambit, which many described as a "live-action chess anime" and was also known for increasing sales in chess boards. She also stars in next month's Last Night in Soho, which looks to be a very twisted, mind-bending thriller.

Furiosa is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on May 24, 2024.
