NBA 2K22 allows gamers to put themselves in the game, playing with a custom character, and they can use a smartphone to do it.

The latest in 2k Game's NBA series, NBA 2K22, has just been released. Alongside standard play and the draft-based "MyTeam" mode, NBA 2K22 brings an expanded MyCareer mode, with a story, quests to complete, and a full free-roam city to explore in the PS5 and Xbox Series versions of the game.

While some NBA 2K22 players just want to play as established pros like LeBron James, and others want to use the character creator to make monsters, plenty want to put themselves in the game, acting out their own pro career. NBA 2K22 is here for them, bringing back their trademark face scan system.

Thankfully, the player doesn't need any specialized camera or equipment to make a face scan. All they need is a smartphone.

Before they can face scan, players need to download the My NBA2K22 app on the iOS app store or on Google Play. Afterward, they need to log in with their Steam account, PSN account, or Xbox Live gamertag. The account must have an NBA 2K22 save for the app to accept it.

There are multiple things the player can do in the app, such as looking up upcoming in-game events or redeeming NBA 2K22's locker codes. But the most relevant feature is the ability to face scan.

How to Face Scan

After giving the app permission to use the player's camera, and accepting the privacy policy and terms of service, the player can take a picture of themselves, and the app will automatically send it to 2K Game's servers. When the player logs in, their face should be available in the MyPlayer character creator. Note that this process has some faults, and it may take more than one try to get the player's face properly scanned.

Of course, getting the face right is only the beginning of the character creation process. After the face is done, the player still has to set the player's stats and body proportions, either to match the player's self-image or to maximize their build's potential in one of NBA 2K22's positions, like center or point guard.

Players should note that, at the exact time of writing, the MyNBA 2K22 app was shortly available but temporarily pulled from the Google Play store, and has yet to hit the iOS App Store. Ideally, it should be available soon, but impatient players might have to sculpt their character's faces the hard way: manually, in-game.

NBA 2K22 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
