One of the biggest changes Battlefield 2042 is making to the series' formula is replacing classes with Specialists. In older Battlefield titles, players could choose one of four classes when spawning into a match. Each class had a different spread of equipment, weapons, and abilities that players could access, which determined what players would want to focus on while playing. Battlefield 2042's Specialists, however, work differently and offer players more flexibility.
One big change between the two is that Specialists have their own identity, background, and appearance rather than the assorted nondescript soldier models assigned to players based on their class. Specialists in Battlefield 2042 also each come with their own passive ability and unique piece of equipment for players to use, although they don't restrict the weapons that players can use while playing them. Battlefield 2042 has started detailing its various specialists, and one of them is Maria Falck; replacing the medic class in Battlefield 2042.

Maria Falck's Background in Battlefield 2042
Maria Falck is a veteran medic and support who comes from Germany and is focused on trying to have a positive impact on the world. Because of her experiences, she has an iron will and is not one to fall to fear, stress, or panic during a firefight. However, in the absence of national armies in the global conflict at the center of Battlefield 2042, Falck has enlisted with the Non-Patriots (No-Pats) to try and track down her missing son David, who is rumored to have joined the No-Pats earlier. However, it is not clear how much this will come up in-game, as Battlefield 2042 doesn't feature a campaign mode.
Regardless of the game's lack of a campaign, it has a lot of lore and detail to its world shown in Battlefield 2042's Exodus short film, and it does make sense that Falck would join the No-Pats. In the world of Battlefield 2042, the Earth fell into chaos over a roughly ten-year timespan that saw global weather patterns become dangerously chaotic, leading to a food and fuel shortage that sparked a second Great Depression. The disasters caused many people to feel abandoned by their governments, which led them to make No-Pats refugee groups. Since Germany has fallen as a country in Battlefield 2042, helping the disenfranchised aligns itself well with Falck's goal to help people.
Maria Falck's Abilities in Battlefield 2042
Maria Falck's unique abilities in Battlefield 2042 are divided into her equipment and passive trait. Her unique piece of equipment is the S21 Syrette Pistol. The pistol can hold up to six shots at a time, which players can use to heal either their teammates or themselves. The gun can heal teammates from quite a distance, which is a big improvement over the usual medic equipment from previous Battlefield titles that require teammates to huddle around a medic. This makes Falck potentially a great support character, especially useful with how much more mobile Battlefield 2042's operatives are with equipment like grappling hooks and wingsuits.

Falck's passive trait is called Combat Surgeon, and lets players revive downed allies with full health. This trait is very useful because Battlefield 2042 brings back the Squad Revive feature that was introduced by DICE in Battlefield 5. Squad Revive allows players to revive other players regardless of their class or Specialist, but doesn't revive the teammate at full health and requires a lengthy animation. This makes Falck's revive extremely valuable, especially for more intense modes like Battlefield 2042's leaked Hazard Zone.
How Maria Falck Will Likely Fit into Battlefield 2042
Maria Flack's versatility as a healer will make her a very desirable Specialist for Battlefield 2042 players who are playing with friends. Her abilities will also see Falck players wanting to stay at the center of the action to get the most out of their abilities. This means players will have to play around objectives while not spending too much time in vehicles, and not find themselves alone on the battlefield. This also will make Falck team better with other Specialists like Kimble "Irish" Graves and Pyotr "Boris" Guskovsky, and other Specialists added to Battlefield 2042 down the line who are proficient at setting up defensive positions. However, she also not team very well with the Specialists Webster Mackay and Wikus "Casper" Van Daele, as they are more focused on utilizing their mobility to get in unique positions around the map.
Maria Falck's positioning at the center of conflicts also points toward players using the specialist favoring certain weapon types. In the previous Battlefield titles, medics have been able to use guns like assault rifles, DMRs, and light machine guns. These are the weapon categories that Battlefield 2042 players using Falck will likely want to stick by. The guns will allow Falck to engage enemies from a safe distance, while also offering her enough ammunition to survive fights with multiple enemies at once. These guns can also be modified on the fly thanks to Battlefield 2042's new gun customization system. However, this also means Falck players will likely want to stay away from sniper rifles, because they will keep players too far away from teammates, as well as shotguns and submachine guns that would require Falck to be close-quarters.
It will be interesting to see how Maria Falck fits into matches in Battlefield 2042 when it releases next month. The game looks as though it will be a revolutionary step for the Battlefield franchise, and there are a lot of reasons fans are excited about it. For any fans who simply can't wait until the game releases, leaks have claimed the start date for Battlefield 2042's beta, but this has yet to be confirmed. Hopefully, fans will get an official announcement soon.
Battlefield 2042 releases on October 22 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
