While Borderlands 3 introduced some controversial characters like Ava and The Calypso Twins, it also brought Typhon DeLeon into the fold. Fans were much more positive on the story of the first Vault Hunter, and now Borderlands 3 players know how this character came to be.
Typhon plays an interesting part in the narrative of Borderlands 3. Initially appearing through a series of collectibles called Typhon Logs, these recordings detail his adventures through the Borderlands universe. Found on the various planets, players are rewarded with a special chest for finding all the logs in each area - though the extra lore is often just as exciting. Typhon takes on a much bigger role in the game’s final act, with the character seen in the flesh by the modern Vault Hunters.

While Typhon DeLeon is advertised as a perfect hero in all the posters and props throughout the game, he is much different from what players would expect. Short and heavy, he was more of a regular person than what fans had been led to expect. As pointed out in a lengthy Twitter thread from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, this was an intentional design decision. Not only does Typhon being “half-myth and half-reality” add to his character, but his look makes even more sense when Pitchford explains that Danny DeVito was meant to play him.
Pitchford shares that he met DeVito when visiting the set of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. After a brief exchange between the two, Pitchford realized that he wanted to cast the beloved actor in a game. This is where the concept of Typhon came from, and it perfectly explains why the character has so many physical traits and mannerisms that make him similar to DeVito. Even Typhon’s last name is familiar, with Pitchford “baking the cake” for DeVito. However, as fans now know, someone else was cast in the role.
Pitchford discusses that, during the table readings for the game’s script, developer Mike Cosner filled in for Typhon DeLeon. Cosner “nailed it,” fitting the role just as well as Elisa Melendez fit Tyreen Calypso. While Pitchford attempted to contact Danny DeVito’s agent for the role, he was ignored. Instead of wasting more time waiting for a response or attempting to hunt down someone else for the role, Pitchford made the call to officially make Cosner Typhon. Based on the solid performance seen in the final game, this was a great decision on the part of Gearbox’s CEO.
As mentioned by Pitchford, Cosner is particularly fond of the role and has been hard at work on a Borderlands 3 cosplay of Typhon. While it is interesting to learn that Danny DeVito was meant to play the character, it certainly seems like things worked out in the end.
Borderlands 3 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
