Pokemon GO players can prepare for battle against Mega Houndoom this month by using this updated list of counters to assemble their roster.

As the September calendar of events progresses in Pokemon GO, trainers are running into more and more exciting activities, challenges, and surprises. While this weekend should keep players busy with Season of Mischief research and the September Community Day event, some players may also be interested in tackling a few Mega Raids while they are out and grinding.

The second half of September puts Mega Houndoom into rotation and offers players another chance to stock up Mega Candy for one of the most powerful Dark-type Pokemon in the mobile AR game. Mega Houndoom can be a tough fight, but Pokemon GO trainers who assemble the right counters can likely take down this boss with just three or four other high-level friends side by side.. This rotation of the Pokemon GO Mega Boss lasts until Friday, October 1, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. local time, so interested players still have some time to prepare for the fight and head out into the battle.

Mega Houndoom is a Dark-/Fire-type Pokemon, which makes it a pretty interesting match up. Trainers can focus on countering the boss by assembling a roster of Rock-, Fighting-, Water-, and Ground-type Pokemon. It’s going to be strong against a lot of the other types, so try to stick just to those counters for the full roster lineup if possible.

Those weaknesses offer PoGO players a ton of counter options and some trainers may already have some of the strongest options lined up with the right move sets and high CP. Players who are not in that situation may want to consider investing some Candy, Stardust, and TMs to prepare a solid roster before heading out to Mega Houndoom Battle Raids...

Best Mega Houndoom Counters (September 2021)

  • Kyogre -Waterfall Water/Surf Water
  • Rhyperior - Smack Down/Rock Wrecher
  • Conkeldurr - Counter/Dynamic Punch
  • Mega Blastoise - Water Gun/Hydro Cannon
  • Rampardos - Counter/Aura Sphere
  • Machamp - Counter/Dynamic Punch
  • Terrakion - Smack Down/Rock Slide
  • Tyranitar - Smack Down/Stone Edge
  • Garchomp - Mud Shot/Earthquake
  • Feraligatr - Waterfall/Hydro Cannon

As always, raiders should keep in mind that they do not need to have the exact list of counters outlined above to succeed in this battle. As long as they team up with enough friends and focus on exploiting Mega Houndoom’s weaknesses, they should be able to successfully take down the boss and earn some of those valuable Mega Candies.

For the Mega Houndoom battle, that means searching for the best Rock-, Fighting-, Water-, and Ground-type available and creating the most powerful roster available. Be sure to avoid Mega Houndoom’s strengths and don't be afraid to use some TMs, Stardust, and Candy to get a roster up to a respectable power level before burning a Raid Pass and jumping into the fray.

Remember that completing this Mega Battle Raid does not mean players get a chance to capture Mega Houndoom. Instead, players can encounter regular Houndoom as a reward and will earn Mega Candy that can be used towards that temporary evolution in the future.

In the coming weeks, we should learn more about what other events will be arriving during the early days of the Season of Mischief. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
