While it's common practice for GPU manufacturers to do, it's recently been unveiled that Nvidia may be using old die in its unannounced 3060 variant.

With the world still in the midst of a global technological shortage, companies like AMD and Nvidia are looking for ways to plug the gap in the market while the deficit rages on. Nvidia's own CEO believes the problems may persist for at least another year, which means anyone looking for a new graphics card, or even a new console, is likely going to be walking away empty-handed. Tech companies are looking for solutions, and industry experts are noticing one that Nvidia is currently engaged in.

A recent report from Tom's Hardware, states it seems as though Nvidia will be using older silicon on an unannounced iteration of its RTX 3060 graphics card. The report cites a GPU database as the source of the information, saying that the silicon die being used in the company's next variation on this hardware was used in its RTX 3070 and 3070Ti. While the reason behind this could be because of the shortages, and therefore it being difficult to get hold of new parts, this isn't something that is new to the likes of Nvidia.

It's common practice for manufacturers to recycle older die, perhaps even defective die, into some of their products. Such a practice was done on older models, such as the GeForce GTX 1650. For this next variant of the RTX 3060, it seems as though the company will be using the GA104 die from September 2020 instead of the GA106 from January 2021, which the standard 3060 card used. It would be tempting to speculate that this means Nvidia is therefore prepping for the launch of the RTX 3060Ti, but seeing as this card is already out, it's not quite clear why it's using the same die it used on the 3070Ti.

It's also been rumored that Nvidia is getting ready to set foot into the next GPU generation. With speculations that it's already begun work on its 4000 series of graphics cards, it's possible that the technology and gaming world may be about to make the leap into the next iteration of graphical hardware.

In the meantime, not only do Nvidia and AMD have to find workarounds for the ongoing shortages, but both companies will have to compete against a new combatant. Recently, Intel announced it would be launching its own line of GPUs. Within the next few months, gamers and PC enthusiasts will have more choice for their graphics card, providing anyone can actually get hold of any of it by then.
