Overwatch 2 Could Do A Lot With An Overwatch vs. Talon Event

With Talon boasting several playable characters, and Overwatch 2’s switching to 5v5, an event based on heroes vs. villains format should happen.

Overwatch 2 has a lot of potential when it comes to seasonal events. While something like Archives could be retired due to the existence of a full PvE campaign, several other events could return. New events could take the spot of Archives, too, with something like Valentine’s Day being a genuine possibility. However, there is another event type that could be a lot of fun to see in the sequel.

Overwatch 2 should consider a proper Overwatch vs. Talon event. Entirely PvP, this limited time mode could introduce some unique mechanics that set it apart from other events, with specific heroes used and rewards handled differently. Blizzard could add more meaning to individual matches, with each victory contributing to an overall goal for Overwatch vs. Talon. While the concept of heroes vs. villains is nothing new, it suits Overwatch’s universe extremely well, and it could be a great way to continue the story after the PvE campaign is finished.

How Overwatch 2’s New Event Could Be Set Up

As of now, Overwatch 2’s story seems to be focused purely on fighting Omnics. While Widowmaker did appear to be an in-game threat in one of the Overwatch 2’s trailers, most enemies that players will be fighting are clearly going to be robotic. While this is perfectly fine, the unique abilities wielded by Overwatch’s cast of characters makes fights between them extremely fun. As such, any future events should lean into that, building off the strengths of Overwatch’s PvP gameplay.

After the Omnics are defeated in Overwatch 2’s campaign, a conflict with Talon should be set up. This could lead directly into the new PvP event, with Blizzard choosing 5 Overwatch heroes to face off against 5 Talon heroes. At the main menu, players could choose to align themselves with one faction for the duration of the event, and every time they enter the main playlist they would be assigned to that team. With Overwatch players getting to choose a side, Blizzard would then be able to do some unique things.

What Could Be Done To Make An Overwatch Vs. Talon Event Special

If Blizzard were to split the Overwatch community for this event, the first thing that it could do is add an overall counter that tallies the total wins for each side. From the main menu, players could see if Team Overwatch or Team Talon has more wins across the three-week period. Every victory in the main playlist would contribute to this total, with players able to watch the counter from the menu screen. This tracker could make players more determined to help their chosen side win, especially if special rewards are on the line for the heroes that are involved.

In this event, Overwatch fans could earn exclusive cosmetics for whichever faction they choose. Like with special Overwatch hero challenges, these rewards could be obtained by winning a certain number of matches, with players only getting Talon items if they choose to side with Talon. Whichever side has the most overall wins in the event could be given a special skin, too, giving players something to fight for. The team that loses would not get access to their faction’s exclusive skin, and the players that sided with the losing team would need to wait until the event returns for a chance to earn it again.

From a story perspective, the event should have a major impact. A different cutscene could be unlocked based on which side is victorious, with Talon’s victory leading to a darker era for the Overwatch universe. This could play into the next iteration of the event, too, with the winning team from a year prior having some kind of advantage. This would be a great way for Blizzard to progress the story each year, as many have pointed out that it rarely feels like Overwatch’s main narrative is moving forward. When combined with the concept of players fighting over exclusive rewards, this hypothetical event would be thrilling and unique.

Overwatch 2 is in development for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
