After Steam got an update recently, overhauling the download page in particular, it has been noted that gamers may no longer be able to roll back.

Since being released in 2003, Valve's Steam platform has become the world's biggest download software for PC gaming, perhaps even for gaming overall. With the recent Steam update overhauling the download page, as well as tweaking how it handles storage, it seems as though the Washington-based company is keeping its most lucrative asset ticking over. However, there have been some concerns from the community after it's been spotted that gamers may not be able to download old versions of games going forward.

According to Pavel Djundik, the creator of SteamDB which tracks Steam Summer Sales, as well as keeps a close eye on what the software is up to, there may be limits to users being able to roll back games to previous versions. Specifically, they refer to a new method in the Steam Client Beta release, which is known as "ContentServerDirectory.GetManifestRequestCode." While it's quite complicated to go into, Djundik sums it up by saying that if Steam enforces this for all games, it means that players will not be able to download old versions.

This might not sound like such a big issue, as games are often kept up to date with the latest version, and having the newer iteration of a game means it's more likely to run on newer systems and with newer hardware. However, as Djundik is quick to point out, there are some in the Steam community who may lose out if this becomes enforced. Some of those people include modders, as well as speedrunners who require an older version of the game where certain glitches haven't been patched out, or for those who generally support video game preservation.

With Steam users have been requesting specific features be implemented for quality of life, it's likely that some will be unhappy with this news, especially for those in the above communities. A recent Reddit thread discusses these concerns. While some have expressed displeasure with this development, one person in the comments did say that this is still in beta, and users should give full feedback to Valve on the subject.

With Steam also filing a patent for more quality of life features for the platform, it seems as though the company is looking to move forward with what is essentially its main source of income. This latest news about not being able to roll back to previous versions may be just another way of pushing forward, however, it doesn't look like many people will be too happy about it.
