New World players that want to avoid getting kicked from the server for inactivity can learn about the AFK timer in this guide.

New World, the highly-anticipated MMORPG from Amazon, has officially arrived, and it is already proving to be extremely popular. Indeed, hundreds-of-thousands of players are currently attempting to start their journeys on Aeternum Island, leading to some very long queues. As New World players wait in these queues, they may begin to wonder if there is an AFK timer that is kicking idle fans from the servers, and this guide is here to shine some light on the matter.

New World’s AFK Timer

To get right to it, there is a 20 minute AFK timer in New World, and a player will be removed from the server after being inactive for that amount of time. While this is fairly lenient, it does mean that fans that are sitting in the queue need to pay some amount of attention to their progress. Players that do not, and instead leave their computers alone for hours, may find that they have entered a server and been kicked for inactivity by the time that they return.

Additionally, fans that do not want to fall victim to the AFK timer will need to avoid taking extended breaks once they do get into a New World server. Fortunately, the amount of idle time that is allotted should be sufficient for players to make a trip to the restroom or grab a glass of water. And if a fan does ultimately need to walk away from the game for more than 20 minutes, they can at least be happy knowing that their inactivity has allowed another player into the server.

Notably, the AFK timer is currently a point of some frustration within the fledgling community. Indeed, certain players feel that it is simply too long and that it is partly-responsible for New World’s long queue times. There is also the suggestion that some players are using various methods to completely circumet the timer so that they can stay logged in regardless of how long they are away from their keyboards.

However, these frustrations should mostly dissipate when queue times improve, and that is something that will undoubtedly occur. Exactly when players can expect to see shorter queue times is not currently known, though, and it may take several days for the servers to stabilize. During this time, MMORPG fans will need to exercise quite a lot of patience and be mindful of the AFK timer that is in place.

New World is available now on PC.
