Due to New World's incredibly long queue times, players pull out a classic MMO trick to avoid being logged out of their game's server.

It feels like an understatement to say New World’s launch was huge, as it quickly crossed half a million players and over 900,000 on Twitch. The Amazon MMO has quite a ways to go still, with players highlighting issues like the lack of a swimming animation, but perhaps its most immediate concern is its servers. From the moment it launched, New World’s servers have been completely filled with some players waiting hours on end just to get into the game.

Of course, that presents a big problem for those who only have a few hours—if that—to hop in and play. The queue times have led Amazon to offer free New World server transfers, but some players have discovered another trick. Many may have noticed “wall runners” in the game, or more specifically, other players who just keep walking into walls.

This is an age-old MMO trick, but as long as the server is receiving some sort of input from a player, they are recognized as still active and won’t be logged off. This allows them to remain online, on New World, and this means they can skip the queue time when they return to their PC. Of course, this means someone is staying logged in for longer than any one person should, and that’s creating problems with others.

As seen in the above post, New World player and Redditor SergeantSchmidt runs around and sees quite a few wall runners. His message to them is pretty simple: “if you don’t play, please log off.” While this trick gets the wall runners around the queue times, it stands to reason that it lengthens that same time for other players.

Hopefully, Amazon will get its server issues corrected soon so that queues are shortened considerably. If the queue times are fixed, then there’s less need for anyone to make their character wall run, and in turn, more New World players will be able to get into the game and enjoy it. It’ll probably take some time, as nothing about technical issues in video games are easy, but New World is incredibly important to Amazon.

Especially after Crucible’s effective cancellation, Amazon doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to releasing video games. New World is one of its most important ventures, especially now that it’s out and that—despite a few flaws—it is clearly attracting players. New World, as an MMO, may continue to grow from here, and that’s promising for the future of the game.

New World is available now on PC.
