The Layers of Fear series put Bloober Team on the map as one of gaming's up-and-coming horror studios to watch when the first title was released in 2016. Today, Bloober partnered with Sony to announce that it will be returning to the series for a third entry.
Posted to the official PlayStation YouTube channel, the teaser doesn't show off too much about what the project will be other than that it will be made using Unreal Engine 5. While the first two Layers of Fear titles weren't bad-looking games by any means, this jump to Unreal 5 will certainly take the series' graphical fidelity to a new level.

The short teaser trailer shows off exactly what kind of fidelity fans can expect from Bloober Team's next title. The video also gives a brief look at the narrative elements of the new game. It seems like the series will be returning to its first protagonist, the unnamed painter who suffered from hallucinations as a result of the stress and anxiety caused by his desire to be successful as well as the familial issues he had.
The game is scheduled for release in 2022, but a more specific release date wasn't mentioned. As this was posted exclusively to the PlayStation YouTube channel, some commenters are speculating that Sony Interactive Entertainment might be publishing the title as a PS5 exclusive/timed console exclusive.
This wouldn't be the first time that Bloober Team released a title exclusive to one console. Earlier this year, the studio released The Medium as a timed Xbox Series X/S exclusive before it came to the PS5 last month. It's not out of the question, then, that the next Layers of Fear game could be an exclusive when it launches. It's important to note that neither Sony nor Bloober Team have made any statements yet regarding the game's publisher or exclusivity.
Fans have been expectantly waiting to see what is next for Bloober Team ever since rumors circled earlier in the year connecting the studio to Konami and the Silent Hill series. Bloober Team has since denied any connection saying that its next project is unrelated to Silent Hill and that seems to be true as evidence by the new Layers of Fear trailer. It's possible that it could be splitting work across the studio, however, there isn't anything to back that up outside of the rumors from last June.
A new Layers of Fear title is in development.
