Horror icon Elvira will host Netflix’s annual Halloween event Netflix and Chills every Sunday of October, and it'll be informative.

Spooky season is finally here, and once again Netflix is celebrating with its annual event Netflix and Chills. The streaming giant recently announced its fall lineup for the event, and now there's even more exciting news. Netflix has officially announced that renowned horror hostess Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, will be hosting the event every Sunday of October.

Netflix and Chills is an annual event that spotlights spooky Netflix originals. This year's lineup includes the third season of the Netflix original series You and the Megan Fox vampire movie, Night Teeth.

In a short promo released by Netflix, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, sits with a frightened psychiatry patient who confesses their worries to the hostess. These worries include everything from asteroid strikes to hair loss. Concerned, Dr. Elvira hosts a handy slideshow presentation that teases previous Netflix originals such as Charlie Brooker's sci-fi horror anthology Black Mirror. Elvira lectures the patient about how horror is good for your health, explaining that heart-pounding thrillers release chemicals such as serotonin in our brains that combat stress. The promo ends with subscribers being asked to join The Mistress of the Dark for weekly sessions every Sunday of October.

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, is the persona of actress Cassandra Peterson. The character is what's known as a "horror hostess" and first garnered fame in the 1980s with her weekly horror series Elvira's Weekly Macabre. Every week the series would spotlight different b-movies that were usually horror or sci-fi themed. The series was immensely popular with horror movie fans and Peterson even starred in a feature film spin-off titled Elvira, Mistress of the Dark in 1988. Known for her gothic appearance and seductive persona, Elvira has become a horror icon over the years and has made appearances in numerous movies, TV shows, comics, and even video games.

Recently, Peterson made headlines with the release of her new memoir Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark, in which she revealed that she had been in a relationship with a woman for the past 19 years. Elvira has long been an iconic figure in the LGBTQ+ community, especially in the Drag world, so news of her official coming out was met with excitement and praise on social media.

Now, incredibly at the age of 70, Elvira returns to the small screen to host Netflix and Chills every Sunday of October.
