Players can finally customize the weapons and armor that the companion characters can equip in the new Stranger of Paradise demo.

One of the biggest questions that fans had when Square Enix first showed off Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin was about whether or not players would be able to customize their companions. Now that a new trial version of Stranger of Paradise has released for players to latch onto, the answer from developer Team Ninja appears to be an emphatic: yes.

This isn’t much of a surprise, considering how much the development style of Team Ninja’s previous entry in the Soulslike genre, Nioh, has spread into the new game. So, it was more of a surprise to fans of the developer that players weren’t able to customize their teammates in the initial Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin demo than it is that the feature is available now.

From what appears in the trailer, there does seem to be an optimum setup for each of the companion characters, determined mostly by their preset jobs. However, that doesn’t mean that players can’t play fashion manager with each of these characters in order to forsake function over form and dress them to the nines. So, Stranger of Paradise’s companions and protagonist can join in on the illustrious pastime of the genre that players have affectionately dubbed Fashion Souls.

These gear sets that players can dress their companions in also affect how they look during cutscenes as well as gameplay, which helps to give everyone the chance at a visually unique experience. It’s a small piece of customization that can go a long way to give players control over their gameplay that plenty of other games don’t bother to include. So, the fashion statements and equipment upgrades available for both companion and protagonist in Stranger of Paradise are a welcome addition to the title overall.

With any luck, Team Ninja will include the same transmog feature that has previously appeared in the Nioh series, giving players even more control over how each character in the party looks from location to location. It’s a popular mechanic in games with large loot pools like Stranger of Paradise, making sure that not every player is forced to dress in one specific way in order to survive in later areas of the game. Even if this isn’t the case, however, it is still interesting to see that players will have at least some control over both the strength and style of the entire party, and not only the protagonist Jack as it was in the previous demo.

Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is set to release in 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S.
