The Last of Us 2 features an incredibly powerful narrative, with gamers still discussing its risky story over a year after release. The Last of Us 2 would not work without its dual protagonist structure, though, and one artist has shown appreciation for Abby and Ellie through two special pieces.
The Last of Us 2 fan art has taken several forms, as gamers have paid homage to Naughty Dog’s most recent game in several ways. Some have made dioramas featuring the cast, while others have gotten tattoos. Countless cosplays have been shared, while paintings and drawings in all kinds of styles have been posted online. This fan art is all memorable, and while most pieces do take on a style that fits the dark tone of the franchise’s world, Redditor strayscout has done something different.

While there are certainly some cute The Last of Us 2 creations, these are a lot rarer than they are within other gaming communities. After all, a bright and cartoony style goes against the mature world presented by the post-apocalyptic game. However, strayscout manages to combine the grittiness of The Last of Us with some chibi drawings to make some pieces that are entirely unique. While Abby and Ellie are both “cute” in these pieces, their backgrounds and various details are anything but.
Ellie, for instance, is covered in blood. The marks are seen on both her face and her body, with blood stains visible on her hand as well. Boasting gritted teeth and holding two different weapons, this take on Ellie is just as violent and focused on revenge as the one from the game. As for Abby, she can be seen standing in front of some embers, with the artist doing a great job of providing backgrounds that match scenes from each character’s journey. Abby takes on a pose reminiscent of one she takes in the game, too.
There is a lot to love about these pieces. While they have different tones and focus on two different characters, they have a lot in common due to the shared art style. This is a great touch on the part of the artist, as the drawings reflect the actual relationship between Abby and Ellie. The title of strayscout’s post is spot on as well, as like many have said before, Abby and Ellie are two sides of the same coin. Thus far, the post has received hundreds of well-deserved upvotes.
While it remains to be seen if Abby and Ellie ever return in The Last of 3, their intertwined story has clearly had an impact on many. While some relate to one character more than the other, this art captures how the two women are the same in many ways.
The Last of Us 2 is available now on PS4.
