While Battlefield 2042’s Specialists mean a removal of the factions system, some fans are desperate to see one added to the full game.

With the Battlefield 2042 beta now complete, fans have a better idea of what to expect from the game. While there are some things that players like, there are a lot of other things that beta participants want to see changed or added before Battlefield 2042 - including factions.

In the past, there have been two Battlefield teams made up of character models that are clearly different from one another. In the modern games, the teams are usually Russia and America, with each side having distinct character models for every class. This makes it easy to identify which players are friends and which are foes, as even if players cannot see a name or a red dot, they can easily tell the difference due to the outfit that is being worn. However, factions are one of many classic Battlefield features not in Battlefield 2042.

The reason factions do not exist is because of Battlefield 2042’s Specialist system. The entire game focuses on these different characters, with each boasting a special piece of equipment and an extra ability. While part of the appeal is the fact that players can use any character with any weapon on both teams, this means that players could see a fight between two Webster Mackay’s or more. As a result, they will not know who to shoot, with Redditors like Youngstown Mafia discussing the issue.

The Redditor shares a photo of a tweet from @ModernWarzone, with the post in question pointing out how Call of Duty: Vanguard and Battlefield 2042 are suffering from the exact same problem. Both games are making it harder for players to identify who is good and who is bad due to everyone looking the same on both sides, with the issue proving detrimental to the experience. In the comments, Redditor AdanFlores94 points out the strengths of the Operator system from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019, which saw unique Operators for each faction.

On top of it being so hard to tell players apart, Redditor Firefox72 points out why Specialists are especially frustrating for Battlefield fans. Ever since the series’ multiplayer took off, fans have been using a class system. These classes made Battlefield feel unique, as it was a noticeable difference from what was seen in shooters like Call of Duty. While most wanted to see less restrictions placed on weapons, the class system overall was solid, and removing it entirely was already divisive. With Specialists now causing real issues on top of being a bold change, it makes sense that fans are frustrated.

Unfortunately, Battlefield 2042’s story is all about the Non-Patriated Specialists fighting for both Russia and America. As such, it is hard to imagine a scenario where factions are actually introduced, so hopefully DICE finds another way to make enemies stand out more clearly.

Battlefield 2042 releases November 19, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
