Certain pieces of equipment in Diablo 2: Resurrected can add or subtract a character's Light Radius, but what does the stat mean?

Quick Links

There are a lot of different stats attached to the many pieces of equipment that players can find in Diablo 2: Resurrected. Some are self-explanatory, like adding to element resistances, or upping the chance to block. Then there are the less obvious stat changes, like Light Radius.

Light Radius in Diablo 2: Resurrected can be extra confusing, as equipment can actually have both plus and minus numbers attached to them. Meaning playing could be using equipment that is both giving them Light Radius, while also taking it away. This guide will detail what exactly Light Radius is, and whether having plus or minus is good or bad.

What is Light Radius in Diablo 2: Resurrected?

The only thing that Light Radius effects in Diablo 2: Resurrected is the amount of light that surrounds a character in dark areas. This could be in a dungeon, cave, or an above-ground location at night. There is no huge advantage to having either a large or small Light Radius, and seems to just be a left-over mechanic from the original Diablo. Although it can help slightly when searching for hard-to-spot dungeons like the Claw Viper Temple in Diablo 2: Resurrected.

In the first Diablo, an increased Light Radius would alert enemies to a character's presence sooner. This resulted in some players equipping gear that reduced their radius as much as possible so that they could actually sneak past some enemies. This has been tested in Diablo 2, but unfortunately doesn't work the same way. It was useful in the original sequel for brightening up environments to spot loot and high-leveled enemies, but this is less of a problem in Diablo 2: Resurrected thanks to updated visuals compared to the original.

If having a larger Light Radius does sound appealing to players, they should be aware that their base stat starts at 13, with the maximum capping at 18. This means they only need to equip items that total +5. Any more than this won't do anything. There are a lot more hidden gameplay tips like this that players should be aware of, like how to reset skills and stats in Diablo 2: Resurrected.

In Diablo 3 Light Radius was made redundant, as the game was much brighter than the previous titles. The developers didn't bring back the ability to sneak past enemies with a low radius either, so the stat was just trashed altogether. Unless the devs for Diablo 4 choose to rework the system, it seems unlikely that Light Radius will return in the upcoming sequel.

Diablo 2: Resurrected is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
