While the game features a co-op mode much like the other games, it isn't immediately clear how co-op progression works in Far Cry 6.

The Far Cry franchise is usually thought of as a single-player experience, but it has featured co-op play for nearly every entry, going all the way back to Far Cry 3. Far Cry 6 also features co-op elements, though players might be wondering how their progress will be affected if they link up with a friend. For those curious, here’s how co-op progression works in Far Cry 6.

Co-op in Far Cry 6 is a hectic time, effectively doubling the chaos that a single person can cause thanks to the addition of a buddy. Of course, there’s also plenty of opportunities for players to cause that chaos as they tackle outposts, missions, and any other random objective they might come across as they journey across the island of Yara.

Far Cry 6 Co-Op Progress

The most important thing for Far Cry 6 players to keep in mind while playing co-op is that only the host’s story progress will be saved. Therefore, while players can effectively complete the game together, only the host will move their campaign progress forward. It’s a bit of a double-edged sword, as it means that the co-op partner isn’t making any campaign progress, but they still get to experience everything for themselves when they return to their game.

However, it’s not a total loss for co-op partners. Far Cry 6 will allow them to keep some progress they earn from the host’s world. Specifically, co-op players will be allowed to keep any ammo, buffs, camp resources, gadget ammo, gathered items, guerrilla experience, purchased items, and upgraded items that they earn while in another player’s world. Essentially, if a player isn’t the host, it might be wise to treat their experience as something of a scavenger hunt.

There are also other sorts of missions that can be beneficial to both players. The Special Operations are limited right now, but they’re repeatable and take place in interesting locations. Completing them gives players a special currency that can be used to earn interesting weapons, charms, and other gear.

While co-op progress is going to be a bit of a bummer depending on what players are looking for, it’s still an interesting way to experience the game. Having a partner can make for an all-around more interesting experience, and it might help break up some of the more repetitive content found in Far Cry 6.

Far Cry 6 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
