As part of a charity event, a controller modder decides to use the Ring Fit controller to travel across Eorzea in Final Fantasy 14.

Nintendo is known for its unconventional products. While not every idea has proved successful, such as the failed Virtual Boy console, other unusual gaming concepts have become extremely popular. One of these strange Nintendo oddities is Ring Fit Adventure. A fitness game for the Switch, Ring Fit Adventure is one of the latest attempts from Nintendo to combine video games with exercise.

While fitness games are nothing new for Nintendo (think back to Wii Fit from 2007), this Switch game is structured more like a conventional RPG video game. In Ring Fit Adventure, the player needs to move in real life to advance in the game. One reason behind the game's success comes from its unique controller that allows players to make many different fitness movements. Recently, one gamer decided to use the odd peripheral in another popular video game.

SuperLouis 64 is a controller modder who also streams on Twitch. Over the last year, the modder experimented with different ways to use controllers in various games, such as when he played Dark Souls with a Kinect mod. Recently, as part of a charity event, he has decided to challenge himself to use the controller from Ring Fit Adventure while playing Final Fantasy 14.

According to SuperLouis 64, the charity stream starts tonight, October 16, at 6 PM CST. During the event, he will attempt to run across the Final Fantasy 14 map using a Ring Fit controller. In order to move in the game, the modder noted that he must jog in real life. Likening the charity stream to a marathon race, he said that viewers could make donations to slow down or speed up his progress across the map.

SuperLouis 64 provided some details on the challenging modding process for using the Ring Fit controller in Final Fantasy 14. According to the modder, he created a system for the leg-strap that detected when a running or squatting movement was made. "When it knows the user is running, it unlocks the joystick so the user can move in-game,” he said. Furthermore, SuperLouis 64 noted that he didn't mod Final Fantasy 14 - instead, the game is registering the inputs sent through the controller.

Besides playing Final Fantasy 14 using a Ring Fit controller, SuperLouis 64 has discovered other unusual uses for the device as well. A couple of months ago, he decided to use the Ring Fit controller to play Overwatch on the Nintendo Switch. In addition, another fan turned the fitness accessory into a playable accordion capable of playing different pitches.

It’s impressive to see fans come up with new ways to use gaming peripherals. After completing his journey across Eorzea in Final Fantasy 14, it will be worth keeping an eye on whatever SuperLouis 64 does with the controller next.

Ring Fit Adventure is available now on the Nintendo Switch.
