The upcoming HBO Max exclusive Batgirl feature film has finally got concept art that showcases the costume and Gotham City from afar. Batgirl will take place in the same city that is home to the famous caped crusader Batman.
Batgirl stars Leslie Grace as the lead role of Barbara Gordon, who is one of Batman's most iconic crimefighting partners. The film will focus mainly on her, but there are no details on the plot or the villains as of yet. There were a few rumors that said Firefly and Killer Moth, who are both lesser-known DC villains in Batman's rogue's gallery, could be involved. Both have the ability to flight due to the mechanization of different weaponry.

During DC FanDome 2021, Grace appeared alongside writer Christina Hodson and directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to shed new light on the Batgirl film. Because the film is in pre-production, footage of Batgirl could not be unveiled. However, the team shared a first look at the aforementioned concept art, which shows Batgirl in her classic cowl and costume. The directors also confirmed that Barbara Gordon will be sporting her iconic red hair in Batgirl.
If there's any truth to the rumors of the villains, then it would be a good idea to see them. Batgirl is often underutilized in DC projects unless Batman is involved, so it'll be good to see the character finally get her own film project. DC needs to continuously give their lesser-known heroes much more shine, as right now Batman and Superman are the most used characters. Batgirl also got some more attention during the recent DC FanDome event by also making an appearance in the upcoming Gotham Knights video game as a fully playable character. Her, Robin, Red Hood, and Nightwing are all playable in the game, which involves the Court of Owls in a world where Batman is no longer around.
This upcoming Batgirl film has an important role to play in the long run of DC projects. The movie will have Batgirl at the front and center instead of relying on the often-used Batman. Black Canary is another hero who will be getting a solo project on HBO Max, which will focus on her instead of her often associated partner, Green Arrow.
DC's superhero projects often focus on the star or draw the power of the main heroes, while leaving the lesser-known characters in the background. It makes it easier to write a story, bring in viewers, and retain focus for the film at the cost of not being able to compete with Marvel's deep list of prominent heroes. Batgirl may help increase the list of popular characters, especially the villains. The film can benefit from bringing another one of Batman's underused villains to the big screen. Imagine a fight between Batgirl and Mr. Freeze. A live-action fight set in the gritty universe started by Zack Snyder would be something that fans would love.
Batgirl is expected to be released on HBO Max in 2022.
