Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom teased the return of King Nereus, who is the father of Mera. Played by Swedish actor Dolph Lundgren, King Nereus is a character from the comic books who has been seen as both an ally and foe to Aquaman.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom plot details are currently under wraps right now and fans don't know too much regarding the upcoming movie. The sequel will evidently follow up the previous film while also diving into another aspect of the underwater kingdom Atlantis. Recently, it was revealed at the DC FanDome event that Aquaman 2 will be much darker than the previous film, which had a lot of lighthearted moments and humorous scenes.

King Nereus' role can potentially be as small or even bigger than what it was in the previous Aquaman film. If he ends up playing an antagonistic role, then fans shouldn't be surprised if the seeds are planted in Aquaman 2. The character may also take on a unique role for the upcoming film, one completely unrelated to the comics. Lundgren took to his Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes photo of him in costume for the upcoming sequel. His character will again be sporting the red/grey look for his hair, just like in the previous film. The character had red hair in the comics, so for hardcore fans, this character is right on brand.
Lundgren wasn't the only one to share a behind-the-scenes photo. Recently, Patrick Wilson's Ocean Master was revealed to be getting a new look in the upcoming film. The character grew his hair and beard out, which looks very similar to the Aquaman seen in the Justice League animated series. Ocean Master was imprisoned and exiled for what he did in the last film, so fans will be able to see how the character has changed when he returns to Aquaman 2.
DC has really been revamping Aquaman as a successful property. The character has been taken more seriously, viewed as more of a threat, and even garnered a larger fan base. Hopefully, Aquaman 2 will continue to solidify the role the character plays in upcoming DC storylines.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 16, 2022.
