During the BlizzCon 2021 event, Blizzard reveals two new maps coming to the upcoming hero-shooter Overwatch 2: New York and Rome.

For one reason or another, Overwatch 2 was not represented during the BlizzCon 2021 keynote presentation as was previously leaked. However, Blizzard has since offered a deep dive into Overwatch 2, revealing some new details about the upcoming hero-shooter. This includes the reveal of two new maps that Overwatch fans can look forward to once Overwatch 2 finally hits store shelves, whenever that may be.

Leakers said that new Overwatch 2 maps would be shown at BlizzCon 2021, and they were right on the money. The first new map is based on Rome, and it features a mix of the classic architecture seen in the real city with the more futuristic designs that have been present on other Overwatch maps. It looks like a payload map, though that wasn't specified.

The other new map revealed for Overwatch 2 was one based on New York City. The New York map in Overwatch 2 will feature the towering skyscrapers that the city is known for, along with some smaller-scale locations. For example, players will be able to visit a pizza shop in the Overwatch 2 New York map, as well as the Overwatch universe's version of Grand Central Station. Players should see Overwatch spins on other iconic New York City buildings in Overwatch 2 as well.

Unfortunately, it remains to be seen when Overwatch fans will get to try these new Overwatch 2 maps. Recent reports suggest that the Overwatch 2 release date isn't until 2022 at the earliest, and so it seems fans of the hero-shooter have a long wait ahead of them. Those hoping that Blizzard may consider dropping some of these maps in the first Overwatch game to help tide fans over will seemingly be disappointed, as Blizzard gave no indication that these maps will be available prior to the Overwatch 2 launch.

However, it should be noted that these Overwatch 2 maps won't actually be exclusive to the sequel. On the contrary, the new Overwatch 2 maps will also be available in the original Overwatch game. That's because Overwatch and Overwatch 2 share their PvP, and while the games may eventually fold into a singular experience, that won't be the case when the sequel first launches, whenever that may be.

Blizzard has continued to reveal some fresh Overwatch 2 details since revealing these maps, showing off new looks for established heroes like McCree while also further explaining the game's Hero Missions. There's still a lot for fans to find out about Overwatch 2, so hopefully Blizzard keeps the details coming in regularly while the wait for launch continues.

Overwatch 2 is in development for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
