Throughout the Age of Middle Earth, there have been two terrible dark lords of note: Melkor and Sauron. Melkor (also referred to as Morgoth) was the malicious ruler of the First Age, and Sauron was his apprentice until he was overthrown, at which point Sauron escaped in the form of a large flying bat, and began to gather strength to rise up and challenge his enemies.
