The Scorpion Sentinel is one of the first bosses in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but it can be tricky to get past its many versatile attacks.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake was one of the most surprising releases of 2020. While the action-RPG from Square Enix expanded on many aspects of  the original game, it also remained faithful to its spirit. One of the most praised features of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake were its engaging boss fights.

In particular, iconic bosses from the original Final Fantasy 7 return in new and expanded battles. One of these is Scorpion Sentinel, a robotic sentry weapon from Shinra's Advanced Weaponry Division. Players will encounter Scorpion Sentinel during the game's first chapter, The Destruction of Mako Reactor 1.

The first phrase of the Scorpion Sentinel boss battle is relatively straightforward, despite its intimidating appearance. The Scorpion will use a variety of attacks, including gunfire, missiles, and melee attacks with its claws and tail. Stick with Cloud to deal Physical damage to the boss directly, making sure to dodge the well-telegraphed attacks. The Scorpion Sentinel is weak to Lightning Materia, so make good use of Barret's Thunder spell. Lightning will also break the boss' grip if it grabs a party member in its claws.

Phase two will begin when the Scorpion Sentinel reaches 75% health, with a short cutscene. The Scorpion will now attack with powerful long-range missile salvoes, so players should get close again as quickly as possible. The Scorpion Sentinel is protected by a barrier in this phase, blocking all Lightning Materia and a lot of Physical damage. Fortunately, the barrier can be removed by destroying the Field Generator at the base of the Scorpion's tale.

The third phase of the Scorpion Sentinel boss fight in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake will begin when the boss reaches 50% health. In this phase the Scorpion will gain two new tail attacks, a salvo of blasts and a powerful laser. The laser takes some time to charge, but can be easily dodged by Cloud in his Operator stance. Debris will fall from the ceiling at the beginning of the phase, and can be used as cover from the laser.

The final phase of the Scorpion Sentinel's boss fight begins when it reaches 25% health. Once again, the boss will gain two new abilities in a last ditch attempt to defeat the party. The first is Auto-Repair, which will cause the boss to passively regain health. The second is Overkill, in which the Scorpion Sentinel uses all its weapons at once in one incredibly powerful salvo. The best counter to this phase is to act aggressively. Cloud in Punisher stance can easily outstrip the Auto-Repair ability, allowing him to take down the boss with a final series of combos.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available now for PS4, and is scheduled to be released for PS5 in June.
