One of the first games ever revealed for Sony's next-generation PlayStation 5 console was Godfall from Counterplay Games and Gearbox Software. A so-called looter-slasher, Godfall was set to be one of the PS5's big console exclusive games, and it's safe to say that there was quite a bit of hype for it going into its release. Unfortunately, Godfall was not well-received when it finally launched, earning mixed to negative reviews from critics.

Since its launch, Godfall has received some updates that have improved the game somewhat, and while it's still not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, it is in much better shape than it once was. There are likely many gamers out there that would have a decent enough time with Godfall's weighty combat system, but may be turned off by the lackluster review scores (which are all based on how the game was at launch) and high price point.

For these reasons, Godfall would be the perfect game to be featured as one of the free PlayStation Plus game in future.

Many Godfall reviews pointed out how the game's high $70 price tag did not justify the amount of content players were getting for their hard-earned money. Depending on difficulty setting, it's not unrealistic for someone to blow through Godfall in less than 10 hours, and that would include doing the extra content since players are forced to do some of the side missions to progress the main story anyway.

Godfall has some endgame content like the Tower of Trials, which challenges players to see how far they can ride an elevator while killing waves of enemies and collecting various bonuses. Godfall also has Dreamstones, which allows players to replay previously completed missions with modifiers to make them a bit more challenging. Besides that, the only other replay value is from grinding for new gear, so there really isn't a ton of quality replay value in the game, truth be told.

But that kind of stuff isn't nearly as important when someone is playing it through PlayStation Plus instead of paying a staggering $70 for it. Take one of the free PS Plus games for March 2021 as an example. Maquette is a small-scale first-person puzzle game that players can realistically complete in two to three hours (or far less if they are quick to figure out the puzzles). Its incredibly short length may have been scrutinized more had it not been part of the PS Plus lineup, but because it was free to subscribers, the general public seems to be more forgiving.

Similarly, being a part of the free PS Plus lineup would help people overlook Godfall's $70 price tag, since it wouldn't really impact them, and they would then be able to enjoy the game for its combat, which can be quite fun. They won't be all that concerned with how short the game is or that it doesn't have compelling endgame content - all they have to worry about is looting and slashing through enemies, which is enhanced by the way Godfall uses the PS5 DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

One of the big criticisms levied at Godfall when it first launched was the way that it handled co-op. For some bizarre reason, Godfall does not allow for online co-op matchmaking, meaning players have to have friends with the game if they hope to enjoy its online functionality. The fact that PS5 systems are extremely difficult to come by may have already thrown a wrench in peoples' plans to play Godfall online co-op, but the $70 price tag could have made it difficult for gamers to convince their buddies to pick up a copy of the game for themselves.

Godfall being added to the free PS Plus lineup would completely eliminate the cost barrier, therefore making it far more likely that fans of the game will be able to find people to play its co-op with. And if Godfall players can play the game's co-op, they may find that they are having a much better time with the experience overall. Not only will this benefit people who decide to download the game through PlayStation Plus, but also individuals who already purchased Godfall and haven't been able to play with their friends.

Unfortunately, if Godfall does become a free PS Plus game, it won't be happening anytime soon. Sony has already confirmed that the free PS5 PS Plus game for April 2021 is Oddworld: Soulstorm, so fans would have to wait until May at best to get Godfall as a free game. Of course, that's assuming that Godfall is ever added to the free PS Plus lineup at all. It's entirely within the realm of possibility that the game never makes its way to the service, and so fans should keep that in mind.

There are a couple of things working against Godfall coming to PS Plus. One is that the game has a Metacritic score in the 60 range, which is lower than most of the games that Sony adds to the free PS Plus lineup. And secondly, Sony has shown a pattern of adding brand new games to the PS Plus lineup when it comes to the PS5 offerings, with that holding true for almost every single PS Plus PS5 game so far (with the one exception being Maneater).

If Godfall ever does join the PS Plus lineup, it could give the game a second chance at a first impression, and it may very well manage to find some new fans in the process.
