Despite the shaky state of theatre reopenings and the risk of low attendance due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Marvel Studios' Black Widow is still set to debut in theatres in May. With the premiere date closing in fast, the studio has been ramping up its marketing for the highly-anticipating film with a new promotional approach that involves a surprise drop of never-before-seen shots and stills.
The images, which have been circulating on Twitter, show the Black Widow cast in various shots from the film, as well as behind-the-scenes on the set. Several close-up shots of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johannson) are included in the batch, as well as new looks at Melena Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), Red Guardian (David Harbour), the mysterious Taskmaster (OT Fagbenle), and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) behind a sniper rifle.

Black Widow will take place sometime between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, following the Avenger as she confronts a dangerous conspiracy that is tied to her past. The film will also take a deeper look into her origin story, which involves a young Natasha Romanoff being groomed by the KGB to become their ultimate assassin. Currently, it is unclear whether or not Black Widow will appear in any other works in the MCU's Phase 4. The last time we saw her was in Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame, where she sacrificed her life in a shocking twist to help the Avengers obtain the Soul Stone. Before she committed the act, Red Skull, the protector of the Soul Stone, made it clear that whoever gave their life to the stone cannot be brought back in any way.
However, fans are still hoping the leather-suited heroine is still alive, somehow, and they've even taken to social media to put forth some theories on how she could make a return to the MCU despite her death. One Reddit user named Metrilean makes the point that Natasha Romanoff has died and come back to life in the comics before (sort of).
In Marvel's Secret Empire series, Black Widow is killed by an evil Captain America as she tries to fend him off from killing Spider-Man. She later comes back as a clone of Black Widow, complete with Natasha Romanoff's memories and all, thanks to the Black Widow Ops Program run out of the Red Room.
We know that the Red Room will play a role in the upcoming Black Widow film, so who knows - maybe Marvel has something up its sleeves with regards to a possible Black Widow comeback. Fans will just have to wait and see for themselves how the film (and the rest of Phase 4) will play out.
Black Widow is set to premiere in theatres this May 7.
