A recent Reddit post shows off a commissioned custom Game Boy Classic that is covered in fearsome artwork from the Berserk series.

An unexpected meeting of Pokemon and Berserk has hit the web as Reddit user sudo_mango89 shared a customized Game Boy Classic that they commissioned. The Game Boy—running Pokemon Yellow in the photo—is completely decked out in Berserk art, and many of the buttons have been replaced by translucent red counterparts.

The piece in question was put together by pickedmods on Instagram, who has since stopped taking commissions. The Game Boy Classic's shell was completely hand-painted by Instagram user tigerlilliexoxo with a fearsome portrait of Guts, replete with sharp fangs and a menacing expression. The commission also includes a customized Berserk screen protector—the frame surrounding the screen—that was created by retromoddingcom on Instagram. The frame is decorated with a collage of various characters that Guts encounters including Farnese, Judeau, and Gaston, among others. As a final neat touch, the battery indicator, which glows red, is placed directly over Guts' left eye, lending him a demonic appearance.

Fans have seen Berserk crossover into all sorts of strange places including a Witcher 3 mod from last year that saw Geralt swapped out for the Black Swordsman. But the connection between Pokemon and Berserk may not be as farfetched as fans would think. In fact, the 1997 Berserk anime was created by OLM, the same studio responsible for the Pokemon TV series.

This beautiful piece of work comes as part of a wave in a recent revival of Game Boy excitement. Just last week, a long-forgotten RPG called Infinity, which was intended for the Game Boy Color, began development nearly 20 years after its cancelation. With an uptick in retro purchases during quarantine, the Berserk-themed Game Boy Classic stands as one of the stranger nostalgic offerings that fans have seen.
