Splatoon 3: Big Run's Tone Feels Like a Poor Fit for the Franchise

Splatoon 3's introduction of Big Run this month presents an interesting new multiplayer event, but one that seems to tonally miss the mark.

Since Splatoon released on Wii U in 2015, a hallmark feature of Nintendo's shooter franchise has been periodic Splatfests: team-based events where players spend a weekend fighting to earn points for their idol's choice in some question. The first two games had one-on-one debates between the Squid Sisters and then Off the Hook, but Splatoon 3 introduced three-way competitions heralded by idol group Deep Cut. Yet Nintendo is also intent on expanding the amount of big-tent events for the game, introducing "Big Run" earlier this month.
