There are numerous Dark Souls mods out there, whether you're looking for a curated new world, randomized encounters and loot drops that could have you facing off with multiple end-game bosses in just a few minutes, and more. Yesterday, Grimrukh and Meomaritus released a 18-minute preview of the upcoming Dark Souls: Nightfall, which you can watch below. In a nutshell, this mod includes new story, new combat system, new world, and a lot more.
As is the case with most projects like this, there is no affiliation with Bandai Namco or From Software. You can see significant shifts from the standard Dark Souls opener in just moments of this demo, which offers quite a bit of insight into how things could end up coming together.

The demo is worth a watch, featuring new voice acting, start of a new storyline, and a new boss as some of the key highlights. A day/night cycle is also being worked on that may or may not have important implications.
Preview of Dark Souls: Nightfall is finally landing this weekend! It's a video of me playing through the game up to the first boss.

Until then, here's a separate demo of the time-of-day system I've been working on. Watch the sun set (and unset) over Lordran in real time! pic.twitter.com/wPgpPebfQ2
The Dark Souls series has led to its own subgenre coming into force over the last few years, tasking designers to come up with elaborate worlds, haunting environments, and fearsome fights that challenge players to overcome the impossible. "Seven years later, the influence of From Software’s Dark Souls on the games industry is impossible to ignore," I said in my Game Informer review of Dark Souls Remastered a few years back. "A challenging atmospheric experience through classic fantasy tropes with a grim tint, Dark Souls spurred an entire genre of souls-like titles, and provided a haven for those who love exploration, larger-than-life boss battles, and a world drenched with mystery. Dark Souls Remastered is the way to play the game today if you’re on console, though PC players may have experienced many of the same improvements via Durante’s famous DSFix mod."
Now, not everyone is into modding. You could always get some time in with Nioh 2 if you can't wait for Elden Ring!
Baldur's Gate 3 is still in Early Access (now with Druids) but that hasn't stopped fans from absolutely falling in love with Larian Studios' take on the Dungeons & Dragons-related tale. For those that have played the Early Access title, you're already familiar with the hauntingly beautiful Down by the River song heard in the game but one Baldur's Gate 3 cosplayer took that appreciation to an incredible level by covering it herself in full costume.
Her name is Alina Gingertail and she has a ton of videos like the one below on her channel, including The Elder Scrolls franchise, The Witcher, and so many more. Her talent is nothing short of amazing, and I think I've watched this video probably close to 20 times now and still get chills:
Click here to watch embedded mediaAlina is from Russia and has a love for all things music and RPGs. Her talent of blending music with cosplay is something that I admire greatly. I've covered quite a bit of cosplay here and haven't been shy about my love and admiration for the craft, but seeing as how Baldur's Gate 3 has completely consumed my soul, this fan-driven experience was simply too powerful not to share.
In actual Baldur's Gate 3 news, we previously covered the newest update to the game while it continues to evolve as an Early Access title towards an ultimate launch goal. From cinematic changes to loaded die, everything about the new update is exciting — even to someone like me that has three characters rolled so far already. The most exciting news, however, was the inclusion of the Druid class. While more classes are on the way, the Druid class is the first addition to arrive and gives an entirely new perspective on major in-game events, especially regarding Druid's Grove.

We see a lot of "gender bends" of our favorite characters and the Slayer from the Doom franchise is no exception. With the help of skins, we've even made the killer of demons a unicorn, a return to his classic form, and even a purple...uh, pony. With the weird variety of different looks for our badass protagonist, having a female-facing Slayer wouldn't be much of a stretch. According to the director of Doom Eternal, Hugo Martin, that creative direction has crossed the team's minds. So why haven't we seen it yet? The answer is more thoughtful than you might think.
The revelation of a possible female Slayer came by way of a recent stream where Martin talked a little bit about the different directions they've considered taking Doomguy and what a Slayer is like in this universe. To him, if this were to happen they would want it to be more than a skin, instead choosing to bring in a female Slayer into the storyline. According to the director, "I've thought about it, actually. I think if we did it, I'd want it to be lethal. I think it's interesting how it would impact the glory kills, the kind of weapons that she would have, the fighting style—certainly all aggression, absolutely, but a different type of aggression. I would really strive to allow it to impact the gameplay in a way that was meaningful. I've definitely put a lot of thought into that."
He added, "When it comes to designing the action, you think about, like, if the Slayer is a Ferrari, then what would a female Slayer be? What would a medieval Slayer be? How would that affect things? What sort of analogies could you draw from that, allow that to influence the experience? So I don't know. It definitely would be cool."
Click here to watch embedded mediaI've been playing the Doom games since 1993 and I remember as a younger girl, I thought it would be pretty heckin' cool to see myself all donned up in full gear taking out the hordes of Hell. Personally, I'd love to see this happen, but I do agree with Martin that if it does, I would want it to be for a reason, to have a positive impact on the game. I wouldn't want a skin and I wouldn't want any character thrown in just for the sake of throwing them in there, regardless of gender. But it sounds like the team is being incredibly thorough about how this could work, which already shows that if it does happen, it will be done in a way that enhances a beloved franchise in a way that makes sense.
While it doesn't sound like a female Slayer is happening any time soon, the prospect does make me excited to brainstorm what else I, as a fan, would like to see added to the game. What about you? If you could bring in your own dream Slayer, what would they be like? What sort of moves would they have, what would they look like? Sound off with your ideal pitch in the comment section below!
