The Johto Celebration Event is now active in Pokemon GO with the Johto Collection Challenge offering valuable rewards for its completion.

The celebration for Pokemon's second generation in Pokemon GO has begun with the Johto Celebration Event. With it active, players can enjoy the increased spawn rates of various Johto Pokemon, new raid bosses, new field research tasks, and more.

One of the biggest parts of this Pokemon GO event is the Johto Collection Challenge. This challenge requires players to catch all of the Johto Pokemon from a list of nine in order to win the challenge's reward. The required Pokemon are the same for each player participating in the challenge.

While the majority of the Pokemon needed to be caught for the challenge can be found among the increased spawns for the Johto Celebration Event, a few of them require other methods to find them. Players should also note that even if they have caught the required Pokemon before they will only count toward the challenge if they are caught during the Johto Celebration Event.

The nine Johto Pokemon that players need to catch for the Johto Collection Challenge are:

  • Chikorita
  • Cyndaquil
  • Totodile
  • Smeargle
  • Sudowoodo
  • Murkrow
  • Sunkern
  • Miltank
  • Larvitar

As mentioned before, many of these Pokemon can be found in the wild among the other Johto Pokemon with boosted wild spawns. The challenge Pokemon that can be caught this week was are Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Sudowoodo, Sunkern, Murkrow, Miltank, and Larvitar. To make collecting these easier, players are recommended to use incense and lures to further increase Pokemon spawn rates around them.

Some of the required Pokemon are also appearing as raid bosses. If players defeat them, they will get an encounter with them where they can catch them. In one star raids Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, and Larvitar can be challenged. Meanwhile, players can also challenge Miltank in three-star raids.

Many of the event field research tasks for the Johto Celebration Event offer encounters with required Pokemon. These field research tasks can be obtained by spinning PokeStops during this event. The ones that offer encounters with Pokemon needed for the challenge are:

  • Use two berries to help catch Pokemon - Encounter with Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile
  • Use seven berries to help catch Pokemon - Encounter with Miltank
  • Catch five grass-type Pokemon - Encounter with Sudowoodo

With all of these methods, the only Pokemon that cannot be encountered with them is Smeargle. This Pokemon has always been known in Pokemon GO to only appear in certain circumstances. In order to find Smeargle, players need to take pictures of their Pokemon via the camera function. This requires players to use Pokemon GO's AR mode.

After players take a few pictures of their Pokemon, there is a chance for Smeargle to photobomb one of the pictures and appear in the overworld. This will be when players can capture one.
