Players can find full details on exactly how to catch Smeargle for Pokemon GO's Johto Collection Challenge in this short guide.

Pokemon GO's Johto Collection Challenge tasks players with catching nine different Pokemon, the vast majority of which can be found easily in the wild, in raids, and by completing event-exclusive research tasks. The one exception to this is Smeargle, and indeed players will need to pursue a somewhat unique approach in order to obtain it. Detailing this approach is the exact purpose of this guide, and it should help fans catch Smeargle in Pokemon GO without too much difficulty.

To get right to it, players that are trying to get Smeargle in PoGO should start by choosing a Pokemon from the "Pokemon" menu and then pressing the camera icon that appears near the top-right corner of the screen. Next, fans should spawn their selected Pokemon in a suitable space and press the icon at the bottom of the screen to take some pictures of it. After a few snapshots have been made, players should press the rectangular icon at the top-left corner to review the photos.

As Pokemon GO fans scroll through these pictures, there is a chance that they will find that Smeargle has photobombed one of them. If that occurs, then players should quickly close out of the camera, and they will discover that the Pokemon has now spawned directly next to them on the map. Players are then free to click on Smeargle and catch it using the same methods that they would employ to obtain any standard wild Pokemon.

If a fan does not see Smeargle as they scroll through their new snapshots in PoGO, they will need to repeat the process outlined above until it makes an appearance. While this can be slightly tedious, it should not take players too long to become the target of a Smeargle photobomb, and only a bit of patience is required. That said, fans have until Sunday, January 31 to complete the Johto Collection Challenge, which means that they can space out their photo sessions if they wish to.

As mentioned, the other Pokemon required for the new collection challenge are quite easy to catch, and completing the Johto Celebration event research tasks is perhaps the most efficient way to get them. Indeed, players that take on all of the event-exclusive Field Research and Today's View Research will earn six of the requisite nine Pokemon, and Smeargle will make seven. This will leave fans needing only Sunkern and Murkrow, both of which can be found in the wild at an increased rate for the duration of the event.

Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS.
