At the heart of all of Dragon Ball, there is one character: Goku. While he may not always be the winner, and there have been attempts to set up other characters as protagonists, Goku is the beating heart in all Dragon Ball anime and manga. The series' protagonist has grown so much since the beginning of Dragon Ball, unlocking so many transformations and beating so many incredible opponents, that he is practically invincible at this point.
