There are many massive creatures inhabiting the land and sea in Subnautica: Below Zero, however, not all of these Leviathans are dangerous. There are some, like the majestic Glow Whales, that demonstrate that not everything in the ocean wants to kill humans.

While not actually related to the whales of Earth, the Glow Whales of Planet 4546B are the result of universal aquatic environmental factors that have lead to convergent evolution resulting in similar shape, size, and behavior as Earth's cetaceans. However, they have some major differences that make them fascinating fauna to interact with in-game for an up-close and personal way to better understand life on this ocean planet.

The game describes the Glow Whale Leviathans as very large communal organisms that swim around open waters and sometimes breach the surface. There is also information about specific parts of their anatomy.

Glow Whales communicate with other members of their species by emitting sounds that resonate within their glowing horns. This kind of communication seems to make them happy and elicits positive social responses from other Glow Whales when reciprocated. Interestingly, these sounds are above the auditory range frequency of humans, whereas with Earth whales the frequency is often too low to hear.
All over their bodies, the Glow Whales have different kinds of bioluminescence, though the majority are created by small organs call photophores which dot their flanks with bright yellow lights and the back of their large fins with pink glowing beads. There are also singular large photophores in front of the eyes of each whale that may help them see in darker parts of the oceans.
These vibrant organs sprouting from the heads of the Glow Whales actually have an auditory use despite being extremely visually attractive. They act like tuning forks to catch and resonate sounds emitted by other Glow Whales. These Leviathans also seem to be able to use their glow horns for echolocation pertaining to finding food.
These huge creatures are gentle giants and are completely passive. They harbor barnacles and algae upon their bodies and don't seem to mind human company in the slightest.
Most of the time, Glow Whales swim about open water in the East Arctic and Lilypad Islands biomes in small pods. They can be heard communicating, though most of the frequencies they use to communicate with are too high for human ears to pick up.

They seem to enjoy breaching on occasion, and it is theorized that they do so for the same reason Earth's whales perform the same feats: for fun. This kind of recreation, along with casual communication among pod-mates, makes up much of a Glow Whale's time.
The only exception to this is feeding, which occurs when Glow Whales dive down and engulf entire shoals of fish in their massive mouths. This is similar to how many large sea creatures feed on Earth, however, the Glow Whale does not have baleen or any other filter-feeding method. Though, they do have ridges along their flanks that allow them to expand as they take in huge quantities of fish and water.
As opposed to most Leviathans, where the player usually wants to get as far away as possible (unless trying to scan them), it is totally fine to get as close to a Glow Whale as one desires. They may be carnivores, but they are only hungry for fish; something the player can probably relate with on this mostly-water planet. As such, there are some novel ways to meet and greet a Glow Whale.
If one swims up to a Glow Whale's face, toward an eye, the interaction icon (a light blue hand) will pop up and indicate that something can be done here. If one goes for the prompt, the player will begin gently petting the Glow Whale on their head, specifically around the eye.
Arguably one of the most fun ways to engage with the natural fauna of Planet 4546B, players can swim above the head of a Glow Whale to find another interaction point between their two glow horns. Activating this prompt will cause the player to place their hands upon the top of the cetacean's head as the sea creature begins to swim around slowly. Gamers cannot steer the Glow Whale or do anything else besides exit the interaction, however, this is a very pleasant and relaxing way to go for an undersea cruise. Just be careful not to lose track of one's oxygen reserves.
