A pre-release image of Mass Effect circulating online shows how much Ashley and Garrus changed from beta to the full release of the game.

EA recently released Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and the renewed interest has brought up some new details about the original BioWare trilogy. One screenshot that was recently unearthed shows just how much Garrus and Ashley changed from the beta version of the games.

The Mass Effect image surfaced on Reddit, where user Gabihorvath95 shared it. The image is of Shepard, Ashley, and Garrus in a beta version of the game. Garrus is seen without his iconic visor based on his left eye, while Ashley is clad head to toe in tech gear, which is abnormal for the character.

Throughout Mass Effect, Garrus wears a visor above his left eye. Although the character didn't wear his visor in the pre-release version of Mass Effect, he's never seen without it in the final version, even during his romance subplot. Ashley is a full-on tech expert in this pre-release image of Mass Effect, but that wasn't possible until Mass Effect 3. These different designs for Garrus and Ashley show just how much the design of both characters changed before release.

Mass Effect fans in the Reddit comments mention there's a way to make Ashley a tech expert ifplayers go out of their way to do so. In order to make Ashley a tech expert as she's shown in the pre-release photo of her, Mass Effect players have to visit Rannoch in the Tikkun system in Mass Effect 3. There, any character can become a tech expert regardless of previous limitations. Although Ashley has the First Aid ability, in which she uses the Omni-tool, this is the only real way to make her a tech expert.

One Redditor pointed out how Mass Effect fans can make any character a tech expert, showing a clip in which even James Vega is able to perform important tech-related actions. Another fan pointed out that every character has basic Omni-tools, although not all characters in the original Mass Effect title can use them effictevly. Several Mass Effect fans also discussed the limitations of having to pick specific characters for certain missions. Most of them enjoy this aspect of Mass Effect, while other fans of the BioWare trilogy prefer the freedom to choose.

Although the pre-release version of Garrus and Ashley still looks unique, the finalized versions do both of them justice. Garrus practically looks naked without his iconic visor, while Ashley looks out of place in this beta image. While Mass Effect fans can train any character in tech in Mass Effect 3, some are more adept at it than Ashley. The final design of these characters was made even more detailed with the release of Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is available right now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
